Scouting report

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Kyler Murray had a nice day against the Raiders last week, throwing for 277 yards, a touchdown, and a pick in a comeback victory. He added 28 yards and a touchdown on five rush attempts, and it was good to see him getting back to running the ball a bit more. Murray’s dual-threat ability in this offense is what makes him a top-notch fantasy option.

This week, Murray faces a Rams’ defense that was torched by the Bills in Week 1 and almost allowed a comeback win to the Falcons last Sunday. Murray had quality fantasy numbers in both regular season games against the Rams last year – although he was destroyed by them in the playoffs. Expect a high-scoring affair and Murray to do enough combined work through the air and with his legs to put up quality QB1 numbers. Start him.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Las Vegas Raiders

Kyler Murray threw for a pair of garbage-time touchdowns last week in a blowout loss to the Chiefs. He finished with 193 yards passing, and another 29 on the ground to go with the pair of late scores and an overall underwhelming fantasy day.

Look for Murray to get on track this week against the Raiders in what could be a shootout. Las Vegas allowed three touchdown passes to Justin Herbert last week and Murray’s five rushing attempts are encouraging. His ability to supplement his passing stats with points on the ground make him a valuable starting quarterback in all league formats, and we have him ranked just outside our top-five this week. Start him.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Kyler Murray was the QB10 last year, but was the QB4 in fantasy points per game. He missed three games with injury, but still managed 24 passing and five rushing touchdowns on his way to his second consecutive Pro Bowl. If healthy, Murray has tremendous rushing upside – 1,786 rushing yards over his first three seasons – making him a clear set-it-and-forget-it option at the position.

Murray should be able to kick off his new contract in style against a Chiefs defense that ranked 28th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks last season. This game has the potential to be a shootout, which should benefit everyone involved. Couple that with Murray’s rushing potential, and you have a bonafide, must-start, QB1 option. Start him.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Fresh off signing a $230 million contract extension that ties him to the Cardinals through the 2028 season, Kyler Murray will continue to provide fantasy managers with tremendous upside. Through three seasons, he's thrown for 11,480 yards with 70 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. He's also rushed for 1,786 yards with 20 TDs. As 4for4's John Paulsen pointed out, Murray finished as the QB10 last season, but missed a few games. He was the QB4 on a per game basis. He finished QB2 with a top-three per game average in 2020, and was the QB8 as a rookie in 2019. His rushing yards dropped from 51 to 30 yards per game and his rushing touchdowns fell from 0.69 to 0.36 per game from 2020 to 2021, but his passing numbers improved as a result.

2022 Fantasy Downside
As noted above, Murray was slowed by an ankle injury, but he's also been limited as the Cardinals have struggled through late-season collapses each of the last two years. In 2021, the team got off to a 7-0 start until Murray's injury was compounded by a knee injury to top receiver DeAndre Hopkins (the Cardinals averaged 30.2 points in 10 games with Hopkins, and 19.8 points in the eight games without him). Hopkins will miss the first six games this season due to suspension.

2022 Bottom Line
With Hopkins sidelined early and Christian Kirk no longer in the mix, the off-season addition of Murray's former college teammate Marquise Brown is an obvious plus. According to Paulsen, Murray is an easy top-five quarterback given his recent production and solid weapons.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Dallas Cowboys

Kyler Murray had 245 yards and a touchdown against the Colts last week, but added 74 yards on the ground, turning in an overall positive fantasy outing. Murray has just four touchdown passes and four picks over his last five games – also two rushing touchdowns – after throwing for 17 touchdowns in his first seven games. Maybe he’s not playing 100% or defenses are figuring out this offense, but he’s definitely lacking the consistent fantasy punch we all got used to in September and October.

This week, Murray faces a Cowboys defense that ranks ninth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. It’s risky to trust him against this defense with how the Cardinals have been playing lately, but as we saw last week, it only takes one great rushing play for Murray to turn in a QB1 fantasy performance. Start him.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Indianapolis Colts

Kyler Murray struggled against the Lions last week, with 257 yards, a touchdown and a pick with only three rushing yards. Murray also completed a season-low 56.1% of his passes. The Cardinals’ offense has been struggling lately and was really disappointing against the Lions, but Murray ran for 61 and 59 yards in the previous two games, so there’s good reason to think it’s an aberration.

This week, Murray faces a Colts defense that ranks 12th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. It’s not a good matchup, but expect the Cardinals to come out motivated after falling asleep against the Lions. Murray’s dual-threat ability and pass-happy offense still make him a top fantasy option, and we have him ranked inside our top-five this week. Start him.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Detroit Lions

Kyler Murray threw a pair of interceptions and was sacked four times – three by Aaron Donald – in a loss to the Rams on Monday night, but he still managed a solid fantasy outing. He threw for 383 yards and ran for 61. He has two straight games with around 60 rushing yards, allowing him to make up for subpar passing numbers.

This week, Murray faces a Lions defense that ranks 16th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. While it hurts to not have DeAndre Hopkins in the lineup, Murray should still be considered an elite fantasy option. Start him every week, regardless of matchup.
