Scouting report

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Denver Broncos

Josh Jacobs led the league with 1,653 rushing yards last season and he scored 12 touchdowns as well. He also caught 53 balls for 400 yards, his second consecutive season with at least 50 receptions. Jacobs is one of the best in the league and returns to the Raiders on a one-year deal after holding out for most of the offseason.

There’s always concern when players hold out about an early-season injury after missing camp, but as long as Jacobs is healthy, he’s a must-start. He kicks off the season against a Broncos defense that ranked 23rd in aFPA to opposing running backs last season, so it should be another nice outing for the veteran. We have him ranked as a top-10 running back this week and he should be active in all leagues.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
So much for Josh McDaniels carrying on Bill Belichick’s fickle running back policies in Las Vegas. Josh Jacobs was second in the league in rushing attempts with 340 last year, and he led the league with 1,653 yards. He scored 12 touchdowns and he even added 53 receptions for 400 receiving yards. Jacobs is talented, still just 25 years old, and regularly plays through pain. Coming off his best season as a pro, he has shown the ability to be one of the top fantasy running backs in the game.

Fantasy Downside
Jacobs plays through pain, but will he play on the franchise tag? He currently hasn’t signed and looks like a potential hold out. If he misses training camp and preseason, durability questions will ring louder. If he misses any games, his lofty second-round price tag will be tough to swallow. Also, Jimmy Garoppolo might be a wash replacing Derek Carr at quarterback, but Jimmy G isn’t a lock to start Week 1. That means Brian Hoyer could be starting for the Raiders, which would likely hurt the entire offense.

2023 Bottom Line
Jacobs is too risky to draft at cost right now. Despite a phenomenal season, it’s hard to invest that kind of draft capital into a player with a looming contract situation. See if you can postpone your draft as long as possible, just in case more clarity arrives heading into the start of the season, but if he misses too much of preseason programming, then look elsewhere in the second round of drafts.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. San Francisco 49ers

Josh Jacobs struggled last week against the Steelers, gaining just 50 yards from scrimmage on 15 carries and one reception. Still, 16 touches as a minimum workload is encouraging as we close out the season. Jacobs has been stellar throughout the year and needs just 82 more yards from scrimmage to hit 2,000.

Jacobs has a brutal matchup this week against the 49ers. They rank number one in aFPA to opposing running backs and look ready to make a deep run in the postseason. With the matchup concerns and the potential for Jarrett Stidham to stifle the offense, Jacobs is more of a question mark than usual. He’s still a starter, but we have him downgraded to an RB2 from his usual RB1 status.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Pittsburgh Steelers

Josh Jacobs was held out of the end zone for the first time in four games last week against the Patriots, but he still finished with 110 yards on 22 carries and a pair of receptions. Jacobs has been super steady this season and has at least one touchdown in four of his last six outings.

This week, Jacobs faces a Steelers defense that ranks 12th in aFPA to opposing running backs. Expect another full workload for Jacobs and for RB1 numbers to follow. He’s one of the safer options in fantasy football, given his workload, and the Raiders will likely lean on him again in what could be a low-scoring affair. Start him.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. New England Patriots

Josh Jacobs was held to 3.7 yards per carry last week against the Rams, but he still managed 99 yards and a touchdown, adding 15 more yards on a pair of receptions. Jacobs has a touchdown in seven of his last 10 games and he leads the league with 1,402 rushing yards on the season.

This week, keep Jacobs active against the Patriots. New England ranks third in aFPA to opposing running backs, but Jacobs gets so many touches that you can’t leave him out of lineups. Watch the injury report, as he’s been living on questionable status for the past few weeks, but we expect him to play and to be a top-five option once again. Start him.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Los Angeles Rams

Josh Jacobs was a game time decision again last week, but he played anyway and put up another very good fantasy line. In a great win against the division-rival Chargers, he rushed 26 times for 144 yards and his 10th touchdown of the season. Jacobs also caught two passes, giving him 42 receptions on the year. He’s been a complete workhorse for the Raiders and a fantasy gem.

This week, Jacobs faces a Rams defense that ranks 10th in aFPA to opposing running backs. Jacobs has been so stellar and his workload so significant that he’s a must-start regardless of matchup. With the Rams beat up on both sides of the ball and Jacobs’ production recently, we have him ranked as an elite option in all league formats. Start him.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Josh Jacobs went nuclear last week against the Seahawks, rushing for 229 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including an 86-yard walk-off score to win the game in overtime. Jacobs also added 74 yards on six receptions, and he now has 40 catches for 325 yards on the season. He’s been nothing short of spectacular for the Raiders this year.

Jacobs has a phenomenal matchup this week against the Chargers, who rank 31st in aFPA to opposing running backs. He’s dealing with a calf strain that will likely keep him from practicing, but that was also the case a week ago. Keep an eye on the injury report, but if he’s active, he’s a must-start and an elite fantasy option in all formats.
