Johnathan Franklin's game not translating to NFL

Packer RB Johnathan Franklin's game, based on the off-season and first three weeks of training camp, hasn't fit as well in the NFL.

Franklin, 5 feet 10 inches and 205 pounds, can't get out of neutral. He rushed seven times for 17 yards in the intrasquad scrimmage and nine for 23 in the first two games.

It's just 16 carries, but Franklin's average of 2.5 yards is about on par with the way he has practiced, too.

"He looks like his numbers," a personnel man said. "He's not a real impressive guy. He plays small, and he doesn't play fast.

Fantasy Impact: 

This story certainly doesn't paint a great picture for Franklin, and further cements Eddie Lacy as the Packers starting RB. According to the story, the scouts said Franklin ran hard from scrimmage in college, but that hasn't been evident in the pros. Renowned for his pass protection, Franklin's been only adequate there. The article went on to say that with Randall Cobb injured and possibly being phased out of the return game, the Packers have been force-feeding Franklin into a role he never played in college. He has encountered some ball-security issues in practice and hasn't done anything returning in games.

Packers RB Johnathan Franklin hasn't shown any "wow" factor yet. He has been adequate, not special, as a pass blocker. He's tough and quick, but has struggled making headway between the tackles partially due to size.

The assumption is that Franklin, as a fourth-round pick, has the team made. But Lacy figures to get most of the carries, Harris pass-protected almost as well as he rushed in 2012 and Starks has enjoyed an injury-free, competitive camp.

Fantasy Impact: 

It sounds as if Lacy has distanced himself for Franklin, though Harris is still in the mix given Mike McCarthy's recent comments. We'd feel comfortable drafting Lacy in the 5th round of 12-team drafts. Franklin may not even be his handcuff at this point. Harris appears to have that honor.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers commented on rookie RBs Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin.

"It's exciting to see both of those guys doing what they were brought in to do,'' Rodgers said. "I think Johnathan from the mental side has a slight edge right now, just because he understands [passing game] progressions well and he's done a little bit more of that at UCLA. But Eddie obviously has the physical stature and downhill running style that [head coach] Mike [McCarthy] has always appreciated in this running game.

Fantasy Impact: 

Franklin was reportedly struggling in pass protection, so it's no sure thing that he's on the field as a third-down back.

Eddie Lacy getting more and more reps in camp

Two days after he rumbled for 65 yards on eight carries in the Green Bay Packers' intrasquad game, rookie running back Eddie Lacy was the featured back in practice. Lacy lined up as the starter in at least two team drills and easily had the most snaps of those competing for the halfback job.

Lacy got about three snaps to every two James Starks and Johnathan Franklin received and continued to display an upward curve. It was probably as much work Lacy has received in relation to the others and clearly showed he has left questions about his weight and fitness behind him.

Fantasy Impact: 

Lacy figures to be the top fantasy back in Green Bay given his ability to run the ball and wear down opponents in the 4th quarter. Johnathan Franklin is a threat, but he's been struggling in pass protection, so he may have a minor role with Lacy as the lead back. Lacy is a good RB3/RB4 type with upside.
