Overshadowed by the news that receiver Dez Bryant's season came to a sudden and painful end was the high ankle sprain suffered by tight end Jason Witten in the second half of the Cowboys' 38-35 victory over Indianapolis. Taken out during the game for a short period, Witten soon returned, making a two-yard touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter.

"It was banged up pretty good in the game, but typical Witten, he goes out and he comes right back in and continues to get through the ballgame," Dallas coach Jason Garrett said. "We'll see. It was certainly sore this morning, but he always gives you the thumbs up."

Based on the comments Garrett made, and the nature of the injury, concern about Witten's status heightened. But Witten did his best to allay any fears that he could miss some action in the coming weeks.

"It's a fine," said Witten, who has made 65 catches for 702 yards this season.

Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant underwent successful surgery Monday morning, less than 24 hours after fracturing his right fibula against Indianapolis, according to two sources.

Bryant had a plate inserted into his leg to stabilize the bone, and the Cowboys will put the rookie wide receiver on injured reserve, ending his season. Bryant suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of the 38-35 overtime win on a kickoff return in which linebacker Kavell Conner landed on the ankle while making the tackle.

Bryant's injury was not the only one suffered by the Cowboys against Indianapolis. Tight end Jason Witten suffered a high left ankle sprain in the fourth quarter but managed to return and caught a 2-yard touchdown pass.

Witten said after the game he would be OK, and he has missed only one game in his career, which came as a rookie in 2003.

Tight end Jason Witten rolled his ankle in the fourth quarter against the Colts, but that didn't stop him from catching a 2-yard touchdown pass from Jon Kitna a couple of plays later to give the Cowboys a 35-28 lead.

Witten caught all five passes thrown his way for 42 yards against the Colts' Cover 2 scheme. It's designed to prevent deep plays but allows underneath routes.

Witten said afterward that his ankle would be fine.

Defensive end Marcus Spears said he would have an MRI on his left calf injury he suffered in the third quarter. He did not return.

Defensive end Sean Lissemore was on crutches after the game with a left ankle injury.

The Cowboys finished the game with four defensive linemen, which forced Jay Ratliff to see some time at end in the regular defense and rookie Josh Brent manning nose tackle.

Roy Williams said he was feeling fine after taking a big hit in the back from Green Bay safety Nick Collins after an incomplete pass. Williams remained down on the field and received medical attention.

"I was fine, but I just wanted to make sure everything else was alright before I got up," Williams said.

With the focus on hitting defenseless receivers, Collins is likely looking at a fine from the NFL. Jacksonville's Don Carey was fined $12,500 for a hit on Jason Witten last week.

Terence Newman said his sore ribs were feeling better after the game but that he could still feel the pain from the muscle strain and cartilage tear.
