Scouting report

by Chris Kucharski

BUF RB James Cook - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Cincinnati Bengals
James Cook has had at least 14 touches in each of the last three games. Last week, he had 73 total yards. He also played a season-high 67% of the snaps. The good news is his numbers have been very consistent.

Cook will face Cincinnati who is ranked 14th in aFPA to running backs. The Bills need to get him involved more in the passing game and he will be more valuable in PPR leagues. But for now, he still has good enough numbers to help managers.

Start Cook as a solid RB2 for Week 9. He should have his 15+ touches and could reach 90 total yards if he gets his share of the load.

BUF RB James Cook - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
James Cook was back to 15+ touches which is good news for his managers. The Bills seemed to go away from him a couple weeks ago, but he was able to gain 102 total yards and a touchdown for a good fantasy week.

Cook faces the Buccaneers who are ranked 5th in aFPA to running backs. Despite the matchup, we expect him to get the touches again which will get him fantasy stats and points.

Cook rates an RB2 for Week 8. His receiving involvement in the offense really helps his value and he should be hovering around the 100 total yard mark again.

BUF RB James Cook - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at New England Patriots
James Cook had 14 carries for 71 yards which are pretty good numbers, although wasn't involved in the passing game this past week. But there was also a red flag. Cook split snaps with Latavius Murray as each player was on the field for 49% of the snaps. It might have been a one-game trend, but it is something to keep an eye on.

Cook faces the Patriots who are ranked 10th in aFPA to running backs. He did get some fantasy numbers as a rookie against New England with 23 carries for 109 yards. He also caught 8 passes in the two games.

Start Cook against the Pats, but only as a low-end RB2 for Week 7. The increased involvement of Murray had Cook's stock drop slightly, but he is still a viable fantasy option this Sunday.

BUF RB James Cook - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. New York Giants
After a strong start to the season, James Cook had his worst game on the field and on the fantasy stat sheet. He had -4 yards rushing, but did manage three receptions for 25 yards. But overall it wasn't a good day for the second-year running back.

Cook faces the Giants who have an average run defense. The lack of a running game contributed to the Bills loss in London last week, so expect them to focus on running the ball better - meaning more than five carries for Cook.

Cook only ranks as a low-end RB2 for Week 6. Despite some good numbers early in the season, it seems the Bills running backs get lost every year, and that could be the case with Cook.

BUF RB James Cook - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (London)
James Cook's numbers weren't as good as they were the previous two weeks, but he still got 13 touches for 77 yards and a touchdown to justify his ranking from last week. He is still considered the featured back for the Bills even though his snaps fell to a season-low 40%.

Cook faces the Jaguars this week who are ranked 6th in aFPA to running backs. We expect him to still see the ball close to 20 times this Sunday with last week being more of an anomaly.

With the tough matchup, we rate Cook as a solid RB2 for Week 5. Cook has the potential to be a RB1 on certain weeks, but the Jags defense might give him some trouble in the run game.

BUF RB James Cook - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Miami Dolphins
James Cook has become the most reliable Bills fantasy running back in recent years. He rushed for 98 yards and added 14 yards receiving. He had 17 snaps which has helped him achieve those type of numbers. The only negative is he is looking for his first touchdown of the season.

Cook will face Miami, who is ranked 27th in aFPA to running backs. Not much of a history for him against the Fins with only six carries in the two games as a rookie. As long as he keeps getting 15+ touches, his fantasy stock will continue to rise.

Cook rates as a low-end RB1 for Week 3. We like the matchup and the Bills offense should have a big day across the board at home.

BUF RB James Cook - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Washington Commanders
James Cook's fantasy value continues to climb. He had 21 touches last Sunday for 159 total yards. It was the first time he has had more 20 touches in a game during his short career. The Bills are definitely interested in him getting the football even though he only was on the field for 59% of the snaps.

The Bills face the Commanders who are ranked 2nd in aFPA to running backs. The touches are pushing Cook up the rankings, but this matchup should be a tough one on the road.

Start Cook as a solid RB2 for Week 2. The touches will be key to watch as the season progresses. If he continues to pile them up, he will head towards RB1 status because the Bills offense will produce.
