Jags Beat: Denard Robinson pulling away in RB competition

When Jags HC Gus Bradley was asked if it’s time to make Denard Robinson the No. 1 tailback, he said, “Yeah, I think he got the majority of the carries. I don’t know how Toby [Gerhart] came through today, but Denard is playing very well right now.’’

Toby Gerhart was signed as a free agent from Minnesota after spending four years backing up Adrian Peterson. But Gerhart is averaging only 2.5 yards per carry and missed the previous two games with a foot injury.

Fantasy Impact: 

Robinson finished with over 100 yards for the second-straight game, this past week versus a much tougher ranked rush defense against the run in Miami. He only had 18 yards in the second half but the Jags moved away from the run in this game. The story added that the team is moving Robinson around and still figuring out his strengths. While he's still a work in progress, he seems to be excelling right now. We still caution not to expect 100 yards every game, but if the offense continues to jell and improve Robinson can at least be a flex play.

Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart (foot, probable) took full practice reps again Friday and is probable for Week 8. Gerhart will be in the mix for carries, though HC Gus Bradley said that Denard Robinson will get the start against the Dolphins.

Jaguars claim they will 'mix and match' at running back

So do the Jaguars (1-6) ride the hot hand (Denard Robinson) or go back to Toby Gerhart? Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch wasn’t tipping his hand much on Wednesday as the team prepares for Sunday’s game against Miami (3-3) at EverBank Field.

“I think we’ll continue to mix and match a little bit,” Fisch said. “I don’t know exactly how that will all play out yet.”

That would seemingly be good news for Gerhart if Fisch isn’t ready to fully endorse the back that gave the offense a needed lift. Fisch did praise Robinson for his strong outing and his improvement.

Fantasy Impact: 

Beat writer Michael DiRocco predicted earlier in the day that Robinson would be the lead back going forward and would see "15-20 carries...maybe even a little bit lower." We're betting that Gerhart stays involved when healthy, though Robinson has worked himself into a large role in the Jaguars' (modest) running game.
