Arian Foster to avoid IR

Arian Foster's return should happen sooner rather than later.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Foster won't be placed on the IR/designated to return list as initially expected, per two sources informed of the plans.

Foster could be back in a month, per Rapoport.

A torn groin was originally thought to keep the Houston Texans' running back out into November, but after successful surgery he could be back by late September.

It's an optimistic timeline for Foster's return, but has to have Texans coach Bill O'Brien -- not to mention fantasy football owners -- smiling from ear to ear.

Foster's injury scuttled early training camp optimism for the Texans offense. With a game-manager in Brian Hoyer leading the team under center and no standout replacing Foster in the backfield, the Texans chances at a playoff stop hinge in a quick return of their leading rusher.

Fantasy Impact:

This isn't much of a surprise but it's still good news that it's official. Foster has been progressing nicely in the later part of camp and the news continued to be positive about his health over the last couple of weeks.

The Houston Texans placed quarterback Tom Savage on injured reserve after Savage suffered a shoulder sprain against the Dallas Cowboys in the Texans' fourth preseason game.

The injury will not need surgery, Texans coach Bill O'Brien said.

Savage suffered the injury when he was sacked in the fourth quarter in Arlington, Texas. Until then Savage completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 135 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The second-year quarterback was set to be the Texans' third quarterback behind starter Brian Hoyer and backup Ryan Mallett.

Brian Hoyer named Texans starting QB

Brian Hoyer has been named the Houston Texans starting quarterback, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

Fantasy Impact:

Both QBs really struggled in their last preseason game with the Broncos. Mallett got the start, going 5-of-7 passing for just 23 yards on two drives. Despite boasting a strong arm, not once in his seven passes did Mallett even look to throw deep, an NFL.com article said.
Hoyer entered the game and didn't fare any better, going 7-of-11 for 52 yards. He did try to look deep but failed to connect. Hoyer does have a WR1 in DeAndre Hopkins and could have QB2 or streaming value to fantasy owners. He's said to be a much better fit than Mallett in Bill O'Brien's offense.

Quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett rotate every day with the starters. Hoyer played with the second team in Tuesday’s practice. He’ll be back with the first team Wednesday.

“As an offense, you have to come together so everyone is on the same page as far as communication and calls — those types of things,” Hoyer said. “There’s a lot that goes into playing quarterback, especially in this offense, so you know you try to get it all right and get your team in the right play.”

Hoyer is excited to begin preseason Saturday against San Francisco at NRG Stadium.

“It’s great to get in that first preseason game,” he said. “There’s nothing like that, so it’ll be great to get a chance to get back out there and play the game.

“I think we all strive to be perfect, we know that that’s not reality. I think you go out there, you prepare as best as you can and you go out there and go through the progression of what the play is, whether it’s a run or pass.
