SF WR Brandon Aiyuk - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Los Angeles Rams

Brandon Aiyuk had a great Week 1 against the Steelers, leading the team with eight targets, and catching all eight of them for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He seems to have a nice rapport with quarterback Brock Purdy and with so many talented weapons around him, defenses aren’t able to key in on him every play.

This week, Aiyuk faces a Rams defense that looks thin on paper, particularly in the secondary after dealing away Jalen Ramsey this offseason. Despite a decent performance against Seattle in Week 1, we expect the 49ers to keep rolling, and we have Aiyuk ranked as a high-end WR2 for Week 2. Start him.

SF WR Brandon Aiyuk - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Pittsburgh Steelers

Brandon Aiyuk had a career-high 1,015 receiving yards last season and caught eight touchdown passes as well. He was the most consistently available target in the 49ers’ offense last season as Deebo Samuel and George Kittle both missed time and Christian McCaffrey didn’t arrive until a midseason trade. With all those weapons back in play, it’s hard to imagine Aiyuk getting 114 targets again, but he should benefit from a full season of Brock Purdy after establishing a nice rapport with the young signal-caller a year ago.

To start the season, Aiyuk faces a Pittsburgh defense that ranked 18th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers last year. We have Aiyuk ranked as a WR3 option this week, and that’s probably about where he’ll remain throughout the season, barring injuries to the other options in San Francisco. He has upside each week, but is unlikely to be consistently a WR2 option.

SF WR Brandon Aiyuk - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Brandon Aiyuk recorded the first 1,000-yard season of his career last year, and there will surely be more to come. It's possible he could take a major step forward in terms of establishing that he'll be a regular at posting 1,000-yard campaigns. He also set career highs for receptions and touchdown catches in the best of his three seasons. He caught 47 passes for first downs, a solid sign of reliability in a season in which San Francisco was hit hard with quarterback injuries while going from Trey Lance to Jimmy Garoppolo to Brock Purdy. Aiyuk has caught at least five touchdown passes in each season of his career as well as topping 700 yards each time. Last year, Aiyuk caught two touchdown passes in games against the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals. Adding to the positive vibes this year, reports out of OTAs and minicamps suggest Aiyuk was a standout in the offseason program. But ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner advised readers the extent to which Aiyuk seems ready to elevate his game might catch some people off guard. In fact, his performance left fellow wideout Deebo Samuel marveling that "you can't cover that boy in a phone booth" and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir declaring that Aiyuk will be a top-five receiver in the NFL in 2023.

Fantasy Downside
The QB situation will have challenges as Brock Purdy's recovery from elbow surgery will determine how things shake out. Lance and Sam Darnold are other options. Aiyuk has four career 100-yard outings, but only one came last season. He had nine receptions in that same game to fall one short of his career high.

2023 Bottom Line
Seems like the positives far outweigh the negatives here and the price is appealing. Still, as 4for4's John Paulsen pointed out, while Aiyuk clearly has top-ten upside in terms of talent, the 49ers’ passing volume and target competition are likely to be limiting factors.

SF WR Brandon Aiyuk - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Las Vegas Raiders

Brandon Aiyuk had a solid five catches and 81 yards last week on seven targets. He’s been solid enough throughout most of the season, even if the production has been a little inconsistent at times.

This week, Aiyuk has an average matchup against the Raiders, who rank 16th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. With Brock Purdy showing himself capable of leading this team and Aiyuk the healthiest option at the receiver position, he’s worth considering as a WR2 option.

SF WR Brandon Aiyuk - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Washington Commanders

Brandon Aiyuk struggled last week, catching just two of his four targets for 19 yards. New quarterback Brock Purdy has done an efficient job distributing the football, which may be good for the 49ers, but not necessarily for Aiyuk’s fantasy aspirations. Aiyuk had nine targets against Miami in Week 14, but just seven in Purdy’s two combined starts.

This week, Aiyuk has a tough matchup against the Commanders, who rank sixth in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. Start Aiyuk as a WR3 option this week in what could be a low-scoring game featuring a heavy rushing attack.

SF WR Brandon Aiyuk - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Seattle Seahawks

Brandon Aiyuk scored a touchdown last week against the Buccaneers, but he was held to just two catches on three targets. 57 yards and a score still resulted in a nice output, but the 49ers were able to run the ball for much of the lopsided game, attempting just 23 passes.

Aiyuk has a tough matchup against a formidable Seattle secondary this week. The Seahawks rank third in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. While additional targets may come his way with Deebo Samuel injured, it’s hard to expect big things from Aiyuk in this matchup. Start him as a WR3 or flex option, instead of his usual WR2 status.

SF WR Brandon Aiyuk - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Brandon Aiyuk had just 46 yards last week, but he was targeted nine times and finished with five receptions. That workload should continue and it was good to see him see so many targets even with Jimmy Garoppolo sidelined with a foot injury that will keep him out for the remainder of the season. Time will tell if Aiyuk’s rapport with Brock Purdy will be as strong, but early signs at least point to a similar target share.

This week, Aiyuk faces a vulnerable Buccaneers defense that ranks 21st in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. Aiyuk should still be on the radar for fantasy managers, but take a cautious approach to him in lineups this week with the new quarterback in place. We have him ranked as a WR3 option.
