When to Draft a Quarterback in Your Fantasy Football League

The timing of your quarterback selection isn’t a function of the round itself. There’s an opportunity cost to consider. Wide receivers and running backs (maybe a tight end or two) fill the player pool. They give us multiple avenues to construct our roster. So, with the other positions in mind, I’ll break down each draft phase and use historical results to find the optimal time to pick up your signal caller.

There aren’t too many edges left when it comes to drafting quarterbacks. We’ve priced mobility into every passer. And, point totals or points per game don’t fully capture what we need on our roster. So, I’ll use their post-game ranks to contextualize the type of quarterback to target while considering opportunity costs during drafts.

Elite Quarterbacks

The market sets each player’s draft cost, shaping our draft strategy. It’s especially true in the early rounds. Elite quarterbacks offer the most potential for not just high-scoring performances but the number of times we see them at the top of the ranks. But the cost is worth considering beforehand.
