Source: Saints best OL likely out 5 games

The New Orleans Saints will be without their best offensive lineman longer than expected.

Left tackle Jammal Brown underwent hip surgery Thursday that is expected to sideline him until the Saints' sixth game.

Brown already was expected to miss New Orleans' first two contests against Detroit and Philadelphia while recovering from recent sports hernia surgery. The earliest that Brown is now likely to return is an October 25 game at Miami.

Brown, 28, is coming off his second Pro Bowl season in 2008. Third-year lineman Jermon Bushrod now has the responsibility of protecting quarterback Drew Brees' blindside until Brown's return.
