Skins Shanahan alters view on McNabb benching

The fallout from Mike Shanahan’s stunning decision to bench Donovan McNabb late in the Redskins’ loss to Detroit Sunday continued today with a new layer.

Shanahan said he met with McNabb last Tuesday to determine whether his lower body injuries would keep him out of the game.

“I called Donovan into the office and said, ‘The thing I have to make sure of is, in the second half of the season, you’re ready to go,’” Shanahan said. “He said he felt like he wanted to play, that he would be fine and would not further hurt the areas that were injured.”

To review, Shanahan altered his tune.

Sunday: Shanahan intimated that McNabb wasn’t well versed enough in the two-minute drill and its “terminology” to ably perform it.

Monday: Shanahan cited McNabb’s injuries, lack of practice time and “cardiovascular” condition as the reasons for switching to Rex Grossman.

Fantasy Impact:

When McNabb was benched after halftime a few years ago in Baltimore, Andy Reid came back to McNabb the next week and proceeded to lead the team into the playoffs and to the NFC Championship game in Arizona before falling. McNabb could rally the same way this year as well but right now he seems to be trending backwards.
