Kubiak will be back, could get extension

It did not take long for Texans owner Bob McNair to evaluate the job coach Gary Kubiak did this season.

McNair said last month he would wait to evaluate Kubiak after the season. A few minutes after the Texans’ 34-27 victory over the New England Patriots at Reliant Stadium on Sunday, McNair said Kubiak would return for the fifth and final year of his contract.

There is a chance Kubiak will get an extension. That decision will be made later this month.

“Gary’s my coach,” McNair said after the Texans rallied to defeat the Patriots and finish 9-7 for their first winning record. “I know there was speculation that he might not be (back in 2010), but he will be. He’ll definitely be back. I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be.”

Kubiak wasn’t surprised, because he’d gotten no indication from McNair that his job was in jeopardy. But he still was appreciative.

“That means a lot to me,” said Kubiak, whose team became the last one eliminated from the playoff race when the Jets won Sunday night. “It shows me that Bob believes we’re headed in the right direction. He’s great to work for. He’s always positive, supportive and very thorough.

“I’m glad we won this game and finished with a winning record. That’s for him and everyone in the organization.”
