Over the past two seasons, Mahomes has finished QB7 (2023) and QB10 (2024) after three straight top-4 finishes in 2020-22. He seems to be settling into midrange QB1 territory, but we know he has overall QB1 upside. Rashee Rice is back, which helps, especially given the apparent decline of Mahomes’ go-to target, Travis Kelce. Xavier Worthy is a weapon, and Hollywood Brown rounds out a good starting receiving unit. Mahomes’ touchdown percentage and passing volume are both down relative to his fantasy hayday, and that’s not a recipe for an elite-level finish.

He saw just four games his sophomore season before tearing up his knee chasing down a defender after a Patrick Mahomes interception. But the good news amid the bad news: Rashee Rice did not tear his ACL but his LCL, which meant a shorter recovery time. Thus, the wideout was back on the field this spring for the Chiefs, and coach Andy Reid said he expects him to be full-go for the start of training camp. Rice’s return will be crucial for an offense looking to rediscover its explosiveness. — Zak Keefer

Fantasy Impact:

Keefer went on to say Rice had 938 receiving yards as a rookie in 2023 and was building off that early in Year 2. Kansas City has been waiting for a WR1 to step into the role vacated by Tyreek Hill in 2022. He’s not Hill, but Rice might be this team’s best bet. He has future Pro Bowler written all over him, according to Keefer. Rice was good his first four games and seemed on his way to a bust-out year last season. Rice seems to be a late third round target in 12-team leagues so far this summer.

Week 17 at Pittsburgh Steelers

The ankle seems okay for Patrick Mahomes. He threw for 26 yards and a touchdown and also added a 15-yard rushing touchdown in Saturday's win over the Texans. Now, Mahomes can gift the No. 1 seed for the Chiefs for Christmas with a win in Pittsburgh. But that certainly won't be easy. Playing in Pittsburgh on a short week is tough enough and the Steelers rank as the toughest matchup against fantasy quarterbacks entering Week 17. Pittsburgh is also looking to bounce back after their Saturday loss to the Ravens and try to stay in control in the AFC North. Mahomes remains a low-end QB1 entering fantasy championship weekend.
