TEN WR Treylon Burks - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Treylon Burks got off to a slow start in his rookie season after being taken as the 18th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Burks did not manage to produce a start-worthy week in fantasy until after he returned from injury in Week 11. However, Burks' role increased down the stretch and he managed to log weekly finishes of WR12, WR18, and WR22 in three late games despite dealing with incredibly bad QB play from Malik Willis and Josh Dobbs in Ryan Tannehill's absence. The good news is Tannehill is back healthy and set to start under center heading into 2023. Tannehill isn't a flashy quarterback to pair with any receiver, but he has managed to sustain productive fantasy receivers in the past, and the addition of DeAndre Hopkins only increases the likelihood that the Titans throw a bit more than they typically would this season. A big step forward is within Burks' range of outcomes heading into his sophomore season, and he remains a talented prospect whose team invested heavily to draft him. He will slot in behind Hopkins to start the season, but a breakout could move him to the top of the target hierarchy in Tennessee.

Fantasy Downside
Burks was poised to be the unquestioned top target for Tannehill before the acquisition of Hopkins, but now Burks will have to compete with the veteran for targets in what is traditionally a very run-heavy offensive scheme under Mike Vrabel. If Hopkins hogs targets an another option like TE Chigoziem Okonkwo emerges as a legitimate receiving threat, Burks faces the prospect of getting squeezed in terms of target share to return value at his ADP. In addition to volume concerns, Burks was not particularly efficient over the course of his rookie season although he did improve later in the year. Burks' 1.96 yards per route run ranked 32nd amongst qualifying WRs and he only saw one deep target per game. Part of that can be attributed to the Titans' QB situation last year, but Burks will need to show some improvement in the efficiency department to break out of the WR3/4 range for fantasy.

2023 Bottom Line
Burks was looking like a strong volume-based play before Hopkins signed in Tennessee. Now Burks has a shaky volume projection due to increased target competition and the Titans' run-heavy tendencies. Burks makes for an intriguing breakout candidate if he falls late into drafts due to Hopkins' arrival due to talent and his young age, but until he shows he has the skills to be an alpha receiver he can't be considered anything more than a middling WR3 in fantasy.

TEN WR Treylon Burks - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Philadelphia Eagles
Treylon Burks is coming on strong down the stretch of his rookie season. He followed up his WR12 finish in Week 11 by going for 4-70-1 against the Bengals in Week 12 to finish as the weekly WR18. The Titans remain a steadfastly run-first offense, but Burks has 20 targets over his last three games since returning from injury. Burks will travel to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles' secondary this week, a unit that fits into the middle-of-the-pack when it comes to allowing fantasy production to opposing receivers. With the Titans likely to need to throw more than they would like facing a strong Eagles team on the road, Burks makes for an intriguing flex play given his recent performance.

TEN WR Treylon Burks - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Treylon Burks is back and his presence looks like a strong positive for the Titans' passing game as a whole. After being eased in 56% of the snaps in Week 10, Burks logged similar playing time in Week 11 but was a clear priority when he was on the field. Even on a limited snaps share, Burks attracted eight targets and caught seven of them for 111 yards. The Titans desperately need a playmaker like Burks to step up and compliment Derrick Henry's rushing attack if they are going to make a run in the playoffs. As a rookie first round pick, Burks would not be the first wide receiver to make a huge impact down the stretch after a slow start. Burks is an interesting flex play this week coming off a nice showing and getting a Bengals defense that is firmly mediocre against opposing passing games in terms of allowing fantasy production.

TEN WR Treylon Burks - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 at Green Bay Packers
Rookie first-round pick Treylon Burks returned from injury in Week 10 to a 57% snap share and three catches on six targets for 24 yards. In a Tennessee passing game devoid of talent, Burks should have an opportunity to seize a prominent role in the Titans offense down the stretch. Six targets in his first game back from injury is a good start, but Burks should have room for growth as he reaches full health and learns the pro game. That being said, he's more of a dynasty asset or stash for now, especially as he gets a tough matchup against the Packers in Week 11. Burks is a flex option at best and probably should be on benches for at least another week.

TEN WR Treylon Burks - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Indianapolis Colts
Treylon Burks is off to a slow start to his rookie year in large part because he is only seeing a part-time snap share as he tries to earn his way into the good graces of the Tennessee coaching staff. Burks has shown flashes of his talent but the part-time role leads to stat lines like Week 3 when he only saw two targets and caught one ball for 13 yards. At least for now, Burks' floor is simply too low to trust as a fantasy starter and he can be stashed on benches.

TEN WR Treylon Burks - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Las Vegas Raiders
On a dismal night for the Titans, rookie first round pick Treylon Burks led the team with six targets and managed to catch four of them for 47 scoreless yards. The Tennessee offense could not get anything going against a stout Bills defense and the box scores of the Titans' skill players suffered as a result. The good news is that Burks continues to work his way into a larger role since being buried on the depth chart during training camp, plus the Titans get a softer matchup this week at home against the Raiders. The Titans' passing game has not been concentrated to individual players so far, but Burks is too talented to continue playing a part-time role. Burks is too risky to start this week given his limited snap share, but keep him on your bench as a young player whose role could grow significantly in later weeks.
