Jaguars OC 'wouldn't put it past' T.J. Yeldon to become a three-down back

Jaguars OC Greg Olson on RB T.J. Yeldon:

"He was a playmaker and he played big in big games. He’s a very knowledgeable, intelligent player at the running back position and Alabama runs a Pro-Style offense and we were able to see him do things protection-wise and route running-wise and blocking [-wise] that will translate to this level of football. … [Playing every down] would be asking a lot of any player. I wouldn’t put it past him. He’s another real self-starter and hard worker."

Fantasy Impact:

Yeldon should see plenty of touches, but the Jaguars' offense has been poor for some time, so he may not see the same number of scoring opportunities as some of the other running backs being drafted in the middle rounds. Denard Robinson had a very nice stretch for four weeks, but otherwise the Jacksonville running backs weren't much of a fantasy factor in 2014. The team did make an effort to improve the offensive line via free agency and the draft, so Yeldon has top 20 potential provided QB Blake Bortles shows progress from his disappointing rookie season.

Jaguars Beat: RB T.J. Yeldon 'expected to be the starter'

Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon is expected to be the starter as a rookie, and he has shown versatility as a runner and receiver – as well as noteworthy quickness as a runner. “He looks really good in short-area change of direction,” Jaguars middle linebacker Paul Posluszny said. “He looks really, really good there. It’s, ‘How does a guy move in space? How athletic is he?’ That’s what stands out. With him, he definitely has it.”

Jaguars Beat: T.J. Yeldon will 'win the starting job' and become the team's 'feature back'

Jaguars beat writer Mike DiRocco: "T.J. Yeldon will win the starting job and become the Jaguars' feature back. Denard Robinson will still have a significant role in the offense and Toby Gerhart will get work, too, but the Jaguars are counting on Yeldon to revitalize a run game that hasn't finished higher than 21st in the NFL since the 2011 season."

Fantasy Impact:

Toby Gerhart struggled with injuries last season and may play more of a fullback/H-back position this season. Denard Robinson was solid in stretches, but apparently the Jaguars don’t view him as an every-down, feature-type back. Yeldon’s upside will depend heavily on the growth of QB Blake Bortles and the entire Jacksonville offense, which suddenly has a young and talented receiving corps (Allen Robinson, Marqise Lee, Allen Hurns) and a weapon at tight end in Julius Thomas.

Jaguars plan to use Denard Robinson as kick returner and change-of-pace back

Mike DiRocco predicts that T.J. Yeldon will start for the Jaguars at running back.

I originally had Denard Robinson here, but general manager David Caldwell said he's going to work as a kick returner in 2015. He fits more as a change-of-pace back, anyway. So the job goes to the second-round pick from Alabama. The Jaguars like his patience, running style and anticipation.

Fantasy Impact:

Toby Gerhart is also in the mix, but he's rumored to be slated for more of a fullback/H-back role for the team in 2015. As a team, the Jaguars averaged a healthy 4.5 YPC last season, which was 9th in the league. Unfortunately, they were last in the league in points scored, so rushing touchdowns may be tough to come by. The entire offense needs to take a step forward for Yeldon to post solid fantasy RB2 numbers.
