MIA RB Patrick Laird - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

UPDATE: The Dolphins activated Myles Gaskin, so Patrick Laird won't be as useful as a fantasy option this week.

Patrick Laird may be a sneaky fantasy option this week as he's currently the Dolphins' only healthy running back. DeAndre Washington and Salvon Ahmed are listed as doubtful, Matt Breida was sent to the COVID-19/Reserve list and Myles Gaskin is still on injured reserve. There's a chance Gaskin is activated, but if he's not, then Laird suddenly becomes an attractive option. Laird has seen limited playing time this season with nine total touches, but Miami's backs so far this season have been mostly useful when given enough touches. The Bengals have given up the third-most total rushing yards to backs this season, so there's opportunity for success this week for Laird.

MIA RB Patrick Laird - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Arizona Cardinals

On paper, Patrick Laird makes some sense this week. Myles Gaskin is out, Matt Breida may be out (hamstring), and Jordan Howard has been ineffective. That leaves Laird as the final option, but is he really worth it? Outside of Gaskin, Dolphins' running backs have performed poorly these past two seasons. Even Gaskin hasn't been that great, averaging 9.8 standard fantasy points per game. Expect Laird to split touches with Howard if Breida is out, and if Breida is active then all three will likely split time making them all irrelevant. Laird would be a risky flex play at best this week against the Cardinals.

MIA RB Patrick Laird - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at New England Patriots

The Dolphins turned to Myles Gaskin (16 carries) over Patrick Laird (eight carries) last week, but will likely turn back to Laird as Gaskin is out with an ankle injury. Miami even turned to De'Lance Turner in Week 16 near the end of its game. Laird has been ineffective as a runner, and only caught one pass last week. He won't be a good start in a tough matchup against the Patriots in Week 17.

MIA RB Patrick Laird - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Patrick Laird led Miami in rushing last week, carrying the ball 12 times for 46 yards. He also caught two-of-five targets for eight yards. He's now splitting time with Myles Gaskin, making neither one overly valuable. He gets a favorable matchup against the Bengals this week, but should only really be viewed as a desperation flex play.

MIA RB Patrick Laird - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at New York Giants

Patrick Laird took over as Miami's No. 1 back, but like the rushers before him, he was somewhat limited in his production. He carried the ball a team-high 15 times for 48 yards while catching four times for 38 yards (86 total scrimmage yards). Fantasy owners should view Laird much like they viewed Ballage. He won't be a great rusher, but every now and then he'll score a touchdown. Laird is a better receiver than Ballage, though, so that helps him in PPR formats. He should be viewed as a solid flex play in a decent matchup against the Giants.

MIA RB Patrick Laird - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at New York Jets

Kalen Ballage has been placed on injured reserve after arguably one of the most ineffective seasons ever for a starting running back. In his place will be Patrick Laird who saw most of the opportunities in Week 13 when Ballage was injured. Laird wasn't that much more effective, rushing 10 times for five yards, but he did score a touchdown. He's been most useful as a receiver with 12 receptions through four games. Ballage wasn't that effective, so don't expect Laird to suddenly be your fantasy savior. He should be viewed as an RB3 or flex play this week in a tough matchup against the Jets, who have allowed the third-fewest rushing yards to running backs.

MIA RB Patrick Laird - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

After it looked like Parick Laird could be a receiving threat in Week 11 with his six receptions, he followed that performance up with zero catches in Week 12. Laird is splitting time with Kalen Ballage and Myles Gaskin, which basically makes him irrelevant for fantasy purposes. Miami backs were already producing a low amount, and now it's split between three people.
