CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Denver Broncos

Khalil Herbert ran seven times for 35 yards last week while catching two passes for four yards. He played five more offensive snaps than teammate Roschon Johnson, but actually had one fewer offensive touch. Herbert and Johnson have essentially cancelled each other out in this offense, and Justin Fields' rushing presence only makes that worse. Herbert hasn't been the best option at RB so far this season, but he does draw a favorable matchup this week against the Broncos. Denver just gave up a historic performance to Miami's running backs last week, so Herbert owners will be hoping that repeats in Week 4. Herbert should be viewed as a solid RB3/flex option this week.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Kansas City Chiefs

Khalil Herbert struggled to get going last week against a tough Bucs defense. He ran seven times for 35 yards while catching one pass for 23 yards on three targets. He continues to split time with Roschon Johnson as Herbert saw 32 offensive snaps compared to 22 for Johnson. Herbert gets another tough test this week against the Chiefs who have given up the 6th-fewest fantasy points to running backs this season. Combined with his low production so far, that makes Herbert not much more than an RB3/flex option for Week 3.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Khalil Herbert didn't have the strongest Week 1 game. The Bears appear to be in a full committee backfield as four players had at least five carries, but none of those players had more than 10 carries. Herbert finished with nine carries for 27 yards while catching three of his five targets for 37 yards. Playing time was pretty split as Roschon Johnson played 29 snaps, Herbert played 27 and D'Onta Foreman played 21. Herbert draws what should be a tough matchup vs. the Bucs in Week 1. Tampa Bay gave up the 8th-fewest fantasy points to running backs last season. Given the matchup and Herbert's usage in Week 1, he should be viewed more as an RB3/flex option for Week 2.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Green Bay Packers

Khalil Herbert is in charge of this backfield following the departure of David Montgomery. Herbert has shown a lot of promise over the past two seasons when given the starting role. He has some competition including 4th-round rookie Roschon Johnson and veteran D'Onta Foreman, but overall, Herbert should see the bulk of the touches in this backfield. Herbert faces a favorable Packers defense in Week 1. Last season, Herbert missed one game vs. Green Bay and the other game was before he started being utilized more. But the Packers gave up the 8th-most average fantasy points to RBs a season ago. Herbert should be viewed as a solid RB2 option in Week 1.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Khalil Herbert showed some promise as a rookie in 2021, and was then given some more touches in his sophomore season. Herbert finished with 731 rushing yards and four touchdowns, boasting an impressive 5.7 yards per carry. Herbert mostly split his touches last season with David Montgomery, but Montgomery is out of the picture now, largely leaving Herbert as the lead back of this offense. Montgomery leaves behind 210 rushing attempts from last season, and given that the Bears are still built for a run-first offense, we should see plenty of touches for Herbert in his third year.

Fantasy Downside
While Montgomery is gone, the Bears’ biggest rushing threat is still on the team in Justin Fields. We’re currently projecting more rushing attempts and rushing yards for Fields than Herbert. The Bears also brought in D'Onta Foreman this offseason, who was nearly a 1,000-yard rusher last season. Foreman is also a strong red zone presence as he had more carries inside the 20 than any Bears player last season (Herbert was third on his team). Herbert also isn’t a strong receiving threat, catching just 23 passes in 30 games played.

2023 Bottom Line
Herbert might have slightly higher production than last season, but this is still a very split backfield. Fields is going to get carries and Foreman is going to get carries, and both are likely better bets to score touchdowns than Herbert most weeks. So when you add in his split touches, his lack of scoring touchdowns and his lack of receptions, there isn’t a whole lot there to be excited about. He’ll be in the RB3 range for the draft, with more value in standard formats.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Detroit Lions

Khalil Herbert played a solid 41% of the offensive snaps in his first return to the lineup since Week 10. But he didn't do much with those snaps, rushing six times for yards while catching two passes (on three targets) for negative four yards. Given his production last week, it'd be hard to trust him in Week 17 for the fantasy championship against the Lions (2nd aFPA). He's not much more than a desperation flex play this week.

CHI RB Khalil Herbert - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Buffalo Bills

The Bears activated Khalil Herbert (hip) from injured reserve, which means he's likely going to play against the Bills in Week 16. Herbert saw some nice production before his injury, splitting touches with David Montgomery and Justin Fields. In the 10 games he played, he averaged 64.3 rush yards per game (with a very limited role as a receiver). He was a solid flex/RB3 play before his injury, but there are a lot of question marks heading into Week 16. Will he still see that same usage given the production Fields has on the ground? Is he fully recovered from his injury or will he be limited in his snaps? There's just a lot of risk in playing Herbert in Week 16. He's not a a good play against Buffalo this week.
