Scouting report

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Washington Commanders

Justin Fields had his best game of the season last week as he threw for a career high 335 yards (his first time ever over 300) with four touchdowns. He also added 25 yards on four carries. Although Fields also turned the ball over twice (fumble, interception). This performance came against a bad Broncos defense, but it was still nice to see Fields take advantage of the opportunity. This week he faces a Commanders defense that has given up the 3rd-most rush yards to quarterbacks this season. It's a decent enough matchup for Fields, who can be viewed in the top 10 QB range for Week 5.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Denver Broncos

Justin Fields had another disappointing outing in Week 3 as he finished with just 99 pass yards with one touchdown and interception. He did add 47 yards on a season-high 11 carries, though. Fields has scored at least one touchdown in every game this season, but he's also thrown at least one interception in every game. He's QB18 through three games, which is well below what many were projecting for him this season. The good news is this week he faces a Broncos defense that just gave up 70 points to the Dolphins last week. The Bears' offense is obviously nowhere near what Miami's is, but it's a good matchup for Fields. If he's unable to take advantage this week, then it may be time to hit the panic button on Fields in fantasy. As for now, though, this matchup makes Fields a top 10 QB option for Week 4.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Kansas City Chiefs

Real-life Justin Fields has been struggling through two weeks, and fantasy Justin Fields hasn't been much better. Last week he threw for 211 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. On the ground, he ran for just three yards with a touchdown. Fields hasn't lived up to expectations so far. He was projected to be a potential top five QB in fantasy, but instead he's at QB16 through two weeks. He could get a tough test this week against the Chiefs. Kansas City was favorable against QBs last season, but so far this year they've allowed the 6th-fewest fantasy points to the position. Fields is just outside the top 10 quarterbacks in Week 3.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Justin Fields had an OK debut in 2023. He threw for 216 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also ran nine times for 59 yards with a lost fumble. One touchdown to turnovers isn't a good ratio, but his yards were decent enough to avoid him being a complete bust. We'll see if he can bounce back in Week 2 in what should be a favorable matchup vs. the Bucs. Tampa Bay allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to QBs last season and gave up 344 yards to Kirk Cousins in Week 1 this year. Fields should be viewed as a top 10 option at QB in Week 2.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Green Bay Packers

Justin Fields is coming off of a season where he had the second-most rush yards by a quarterback. There's a lot of hype coming into 2023 as Fields got a new target in WR DJ Moore to help out his passing statistics. Fields opens the year against the Packers, a team he had two wildly different games against a year ago. In the first game, Fields only attempted 11 passes and finished with 70 pass yards and an interception while only rushing for 20 yards. In the second game he threw for 254 yards and ran for 71 yards. We're projecting a performance more like his second game, which would make him a top five option at QB this week.

CHI QB Justin Fields - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Justin Fields became a fantasy stud in his sophomore season, ultimately finishing with the fifth-most fantasy points among all quarterbacks. His production was led by his legs, as he fell just 63 yards shy of the NFL record for rushing yards for a quarterback in a season. Fields finished with 1,143 rushing yards, which is just the fourth time a QB has ever topped 1,000 yards on the ground in a season. His rushing success should continue in 2023, and we should also see an improvement in his passing stats. The Bears traded for WR D.J. Moore, and Chase Claypool could improve with a full offseason to learn the playbook.

Fantasy Downside
While Fields dominated on the ground last season, his passing stats were consistently lackluster. He only threw for more than 200 yards twice last season with a season high of 254. He also had a poor interception ratio, throwing 11 picks on 318 attempts. His INT% of 3.5 was second-highest among qualified QBs in 2022. He also finished 36th out of 41 eligible passers in PFF’s passing grade. It’s also worth noting that Fields missed a pair of games last season due to injury, and played a few games through injuries.

2023 Bottom Line
Fields may not put up the most impressive passing stats, but he really doesn’t have to. He was one of the most dominant fantasy players at his position last season, purely because of his rushing ability. We’re projecting another 1,100-yard season for Fields on the ground, and it seems like a safe bet that he should top 1,000 if he stays healthy. That kind of production provides a nice floor, which means Fields should at least finish as a top-10 QB in fantasy. If he’s able to improve at all as a passer, which he might with the addition of Moore, then he could finish as a top-five QB again.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Detroit Lions

Justin Fields struggled last week as he finished with just 11 rushing yards on seven carries. He also had his usual poor passing stats, throwing for 119 yards with one touchdown. Fields' 11 rushing yards are a season low for him as he went up against a really tough Bills defense. Fields should bounce back in a big way this week as he draws a favorable matchup against the Lions who have given up the most average fantasy points to quarterbacks this season. Even better, the Lions have given up the most rushing yards to quarterbacks this season (an average of 37.2 per game). Before last week, Fields had rushed for 60 or more yards in eight straight games, with 80+ in seven of those matchups. Given the matchup, Fields should be viewed as a top-five quarterback this week.
