Scouting report

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Detroit Lions

Josh Jacobs struggled along with the rest of the Las Vegas offense last week in what should’ve been an easy matchup against the Bears. Instead, the Raiders were blown out and forced to abandon the run early, limiting Jacobs to just 11 carries and a reception for a total of 41 yards.

This week, Jacobs has a tough matchup against a Detroit defense that ranks third in aFPA to opposing running backs, although they allowed a touchdown to Gus Edwards last week. The Raiders are a mess, offensively, and coupled with a bad matchup against a likely angry Lions team, this could be a bloodbath. Downgrade Jacobs from his usual RB1 ranking to RB2 status for this week.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Chicago Bears

Josh Jacobs had 25 carries and a pair of receptions for a total of 93 yards from scrimmage in a victory over the Patriots last week. He was held out of the end zone for the first time in three weeks, but his usage was still encouraging for fantasy managers looking for him to get back on track after a tough matchup.

This week, Jacobs has a fantastic matchup against a Chicago defense that ranks 31st in aFPA to opposing running backs. Expect the Raiders to be able to keep this game close in score, which should lead to 20+ touches again for Jacobs. We have him ranked as an elite fantasy option once again, and he should be active in all league formats.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. New England Patriots

Josh Jacobs was held to just 3.5 yards per carry against the Packers on Monday night, but he still managed 89 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown on 25 total touches. Jacobs now has 23 receptions on the season - that’s three more than Christian McCaffrey! If that continues, he’ll be able to supplement his struggles on the ground, and his workload continues to raise his floor each and every week.

Jacobs has a tough matchup this week against a Patriots defense that ranks ninth in aFPA to opposing running backs. Still, Jacobs’ workload and recent exploits in the end zone - two touchdowns in the last two games - and in the passing game make him a high-floor fantasy option and a must-start in all leagues.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Green Bay Packers

Josh Jacobs got back on track last week in a close loss to the Chargers. While he still averaged just 3.4 yards per carry, he found the end zone for the first time this season and caught eight of his 11 targets. He wound up with 139 yards from scrimmage and a very solid fantasy outing.

This week, Jacobs has a great matchup against the Packers, who rank 27th in aFPA to opposing running backs. Expect the Raiders to use Jacobs liberally against Green Bay and for Jacobs to put up another solid stat line. Start him as an elite fantasy running back this week in all formats.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Los Angeles Chargers

Josh Jacobs had had a pretty rough start to the season. He’s averaging just 2.4 yards per carry and has yet to find the end zone. Still, he’s averaging 18.3 touches per game, and with that kind of workload, you have to think things will get better. He had a season-high 80 yards on 17 carries and three receptions last week against the Steelers, so things are at least trending in the right direction.

Jacobs faces the Chargers this week, who rank fourth in aFPA to opposing running backs. Part of that has been the shootouts Los Angeles has been a part of, forcing opposing teams to throw the ball. Alexander Mattison had his best game of the season last week against this defense, so game script is likely more important than stout defense as a factor. If Jacobs can get the touches, it’s a good week for him to rebound. We have him ranked just inside our 10 best fantasy running backs this week.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Josh Jacobs really struggled against the Bills last week, rushing for negative yardage on nine carries. He added five receptions and 51 yards in the passing game, so he salvaged his day somewhat in PPR formats, but things aren’t looking good for Jacobs and the Las Vegas offense so far. Jacobs is averaging just 1.6 yards on 28 carries through two games.

This week, Jacobs faces a Pittsburgh defense that’s been better against the pass than the run so far this season. They terrorized the Browns’ passing game on Monday night, but allowed backup running back Jerome Ford to total 131 yards from scrimmage and score a touchdown after Nick Chubb went down with a devastating injury. Christian McCaffrey tore up this defense in Week 1 as well, as he’s prone to do. Expect a full workload for Jacobs and better results this week, and we have him ranked just outside our top five running backs this week.

LV RB Josh Jacobs - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Buffalo Bills

Josh Jacobs didn’t have a great start to his fantasy season, despite the Las Vegas victory in Week 1 over the division-rival Broncos. He was held to just 48 yards on 19 attempts, though he added a pair of receptions for 23 receiving yards. It was good to see him get 21 touches, however, continuing his trend of maximum usage from last year.

The Bills were gashed by Breece Hall for 127 yards on 10 carries - although that was greatly impacted by two long runs, including an 83-yarder early in the game. Buffalo held Dalvin Cook to just 33 yards on 13 rushing attempts, and that’s probably more indicative of the defensive talent in Buffalo. Still, Jacobs is as good as it gets from a rushing talent perspective, so he should be active in all leagues.
