Scouting report

NE TE Jonnu Smith - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Saints

Despite being out-snapped 47-29 (out of 58) in Week 2, Jonnu Smith saw one more target and caught two more passes than Hunter Henry. But both continue to be closely involved in the offense, meaning both will continue to limit the other for fantasy purposes. Smith has out-targeted Henry in each of the first two games, so he's the better option, but "better" might be a loose term.

NE TE Jonnu Smith - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Jets

Not surprisingly, the Patriots ran most of their Week 1 offense out of 12 personnel, nearly 50%. Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry played 55 and 54 offensive snaps, respectively, out of 75. Round one went to Smith. He saw five targets to Henry's three and caught all five of his targets for 42 yards (Henry had 3-31). Both still remain solid TE2 options, but Week 1 showed how each may negate the other in terms of overall fantasy output.

NE TE Jonnu Smith - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Dolphins

They tend to say tight ends are a rookie quarterback's best friend and Mac Jones will have two good ones in Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry. Smith has a little more upside than Henry and has the bigger contract. Both tight ends will see plenty of work, so it's almost a case of riding the hot hand. This is also why each will limit the fantasy potential of the other. Smith has TE1 upside coming off a TE10 finish in 2020, but Henry isn't going anywhere either. Both could eventually become startable options as the season progresses.

NE TE Jonnu Smith - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

2020 finally saw Jonnu Smith really see the end zone, scoring a career-high eight touchdowns, as he was a big target whenever the Titans got into the red zone. In fact, only four players had more red-zone touchdowns than Smith and only one of those four was a tight end (Travis Kelce). Smith was rewarded with a $50 million contract ($31.25 million guaranteed) from the Patriots in free agency to be one of the centerpieces of their offense.

Fantasy Downside

When Smith signed with the Patriots, he had a ton of fantasy potential. Then the team signed Hunter Henry to a considerable contract as well. For real football purposes, Smith and Henry give the Patriots a great duo at tight end to bully teams with 12 personnel. For fantasy purposes, Smith and Henry will limit each other's fantasy ceiling.

2021 Bottom Line

The fact that New England went after Smith first could be telling, but a lot also depends on the quarterback situation in New England, whether it's Cam Newton or Mac Jones. But Smith is still brimming with upside and you can get him fairly cheap in drafts as a TE2 with top-12 upside.

TEN TE Jonnu Smith - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Houston Texans
Ryan Tannehill threw for just 121 yards last week in the snow at Green Bay, with Jonnu Smith finishing with 30 yards and his ninth TD of the season. Smith is averaging only three receptions per game, which makes him a risky start, despite his high touchdown total.

TEN TE Jonnu Smith - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Green Bay Packers
In the easy win over Detroit last week, Jonnu Smith caught all five of his targets for 52 yards. The reception total tied a season-high and the yards were the most he’s posted since Week 2. Green Bay is No. 9 against the pass so Smith is a low-end TE1 start.

TEN TE Jonnu Smith - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Detroit Lions
After missing the previous game with a knee injury, Jonnu Smith returned last week at Jacksonville, finishing with 20 yards on two grabs and three yards on a rush attempt. Even though he’ll be facing a bad Detroit pass defense at home on Sunday, Smith’s inconsistencies make him a risky fantasy start.
