Scouting report

NE TE Jonnu Smith - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Baltimore Ravens

Jonnu Smith has worked back to a split with Hunter Henry after Henry separated himself last season. Smith out-snapped and out-targeted Henry against the Steelers. Neither tight end looks like a reliable option until we see if one starts to move ahead of the other, but that doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon.

NE TE Jonnu Smith - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs Jets

It's becoming harder and harder to fully trust Jonnu Smith. That's two straight games with just two targets and he had just one catch for nine yards, his second game this season with just one catch and four straight games with three or fewer catches. He's a top-20 TE this week but an unsteady TE2 and streaming option.

NE TE Jonnu Smith - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs Cowboys

The good news is that Jonnu Smith saw his highest snap percentage since Week 2. That bad news is he saw just two targets for just 27 yards. His Week 1 line of 5-42 remains his best, though he did have a touchdown against the Buccaneers. He's stuck in TE2 territory while watching his partner-in-crime shoot up the board and take over as perhaps the main target in New England. Smith can break out at any time...though it feels like we've been saying that for years now.

NE TE Jonnu Smith - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Texans

Jonnu Smith scored his first touchdown of the season Sunday but only had 14 yards on three catches and played less than half the snaps for the second week in a row. Even against what is currently the best matchup for tight ends in the Texans, Smith's mix of limited usage and the presence of Hunter Henry makes Smith a TE2 once again.

NE TE Jonnu Smith - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs Buccaneers

Just one catch for four yards on six targets. That was Jonnu Smith's performance in Week 3 against the Saints. And for the second straight week, Smith only saw about 30 offensive snaps. Will that trend continue? Maybe, with the way New England continues to use Hunter Henry. Smith is our No. 22 TE this week against the Buccaneers.

NE TE Jonnu Smith - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Saints

Despite being out-snapped 47-29 (out of 58) in Week 2, Jonnu Smith saw one more target and caught two more passes than Hunter Henry. But both continue to be closely involved in the offense, meaning both will continue to limit the other for fantasy purposes. Smith has out-targeted Henry in each of the first two games, so he's the better option, but "better" might be a loose term.

NE TE Jonnu Smith - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Jets

Not surprisingly, the Patriots ran most of their Week 1 offense out of 12 personnel, nearly 50%. Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry played 55 and 54 offensive snaps, respectively, out of 75. Round one went to Smith. He saw five targets to Henry's three and caught all five of his targets for 42 yards (Henry had 3-31). Both still remain solid TE2 options, but Week 1 showed how each may negate the other in terms of overall fantasy output.
