PIT WR George Pickens - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
It will be hard for people to ignore the parallel between Drake London last year and George Pickens this year. Before you do that, keep in mind that London finished as WR45 in points per game in half-point PPR scoring last season. That said, the runway was cleared a bit for Pickens to be the alpha in Pittsburgh. Matt Canada, Kenny Pickett, and Diontae Johnson are gone. They upgraded at quarterback with Russell Wilson, and Pickens has the perfect skill set to take advantage of what Wilson has left.

Fantasy Downside
From a personnel perspective, things look up for Pickens, but Arthur Smith has a very run-heavy scheme and has proven he won't feed alpha receivers with easy targets. There's also the problem that Wilson still throws a solid deep ball, he does struggle. It's possible Pickens is one of the few players who could improve with Fields starting over Wilson if that were to take place.

2024 Bottom Line
Pickens is going off the board as WR27 and 39th overall. While the allure of no competition in the receiver room is tempting, it is a bit of a steep price when you consider Arthur Smith and Russell Wilson's recent history. If he had his April ADP on Underdog (51.1), I'd feel a lot more comfortable clicking the button on him. He's going around there in redraft leagues which feels a lot more palatable.

PIT WR George Pickens - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Seattle Seahawks
A monster game for George Pickens last week who had four receptions for 195 yards and two touchdowns. The game was full of big plays for the second-year receiver who has been going through some tough times in recent weeks. It shows what he is capable of, but the inconsistency has kept his fantasy stock from rising.

Pickens faces the Seahawks who are ranked fifth in aFPA to wide receivers. Although it's hard to see if he can repeat the performance from Saturday against a tough matchup, we still like the potential. Start Pickens as a high-end WR3 or Flex for Week 17.

PIT WR George Pickens - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Cincinnati Bengals
George Pickens had three receptions for 47 yards on Sunday but has been getting more attention for lack of effort in a blocking situation. He still remains in the starting lineup, but the Steelers struggles on offense have limited his production.

Pickens has a good matchup this week against a below average Cincinnati pass defense. However, everything is pointing towards him having limited impact in the game. Keep Pickens on the bench for Week 16.

PIT WR George Pickens - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Indianapolis Colts
George Pickens had five receptions last week but only for 19 yards. The Steelers have had offense issues and Pickens has struggled because of them. Now with a backup quarterback, we don't expect that to change any time soon. Even with a favorable matchup, keep Pickens on the bench for Week 15.

PIT WR George Pickens - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. New England Patriots
George Pickens had four receptions for 84 yards but his quarterback is now out for several weeks. That means there will be some unknowns on where new QB Mitch Trubisky will look to throw the ball.

Pickens faces an average pass defense on a short week so we will go with the notion the offense will struggle because of getting a new QB acclimated, even if he is a veteran. Keep Pickens on the bench for Week 14.

PIT WR George Pickens - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Arizona Cardinals
George Pickens had three receptions for 58 yards. The Steelers drove down field more last week with a change at offensive coordinator, and even though he had only three catches, they were bigger plays.

Pickens will face the Cardinals on Sunday who are ranked 16th in aFPA to wide receivers. He should benefit from the change and we know what he is capable of doing.

Start Pickens as a low-end WR3 or Flex for Week 13. Even with a neutral matchup, the great performances for him are random and he has disappeared during certain games.

PIT WR George Pickens - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Cincinnati Bengals
Over the last four weeks, George Pickens has only averaged five targets per game. That has produced 10 receptions for 104 yards. Not exactly what the Steelers were expecting from him as the possible No. 1 receiver. Pittsburgh did fire their offensive coordinator so we will see if that helps.

Pickens faces a below average Bengals pass defense, but he is definitely mired in a fantasy slump right now. Until we see signs of him getting out, keep him on the bench, including in Week 12.
