MIA RB De'Von Achane - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at New York Jets

The return of De'Von Achane was short lived as the rookie running back only played three offensive snaps before leaving with a knee injury. Mike McDaniel hinted after the game that Achane probably could have gone back in, but the Dolphins played it safe. Achane has a short turnaround in Week 12 as Miami plays on Friday, so Achane's health will be worth monitoring. But if he is able to go then he draws a favorable matchup against the Jets (30th aFPA). The Jets have given up the 4th-most total rush attempts to running backs this season, so there should be plenty of love to go around when it comes to splitting touches with Raheem Mostert. If Achane is active, we like him as a low-end RB2.

MIA RB De'Von Achane - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

De'Von Achane is expected to return this week for the Dolphins. The explosive rookie put up absolutely ridiculous numbers before his knee injury sidelined him. His rushing totals in his last three games were 203 yards, 101 yards and 151 yards. He also scored seven touchdowns in that span as well as 63 total receiving yards. On the one hand, owners might want to temper expectations as Achane plays in his first game back from injury. But on the other hand, he was so productive and he draws a favorable matchup against the Raiders (27th aFPA). Assuming Achane is active and plays, he should be viewed as a strong RB1 option in Week 11.

Week 5 vs. New York Giants

De'Von Achane has come out of nowhere to take over this Miami backfield. Against a tough Bills run defense in Week 4, Achane ran eight times for 101 yards with two touchdowns. He also caught three of his five targets for 19 yards. Achane is now RB3 in half-PPR despite only having two offensive touches in the first two games of the season. Achane has suddenly put himself into must-start territory, especially as he gets a decent matchup against the Giants who are 20th in aFPA. It's hard to imagine he'll keep up this insane pace, but we also wouldn't want to leave him on the bench while he's putting these numbers up. He's a top 10 option at RB in Week 5.

MIA RB Devon Achane - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Buffalo Bills

De’Von Achane came out of nowhere in Week 3 to deliver one of the great fantasy games we've ever seen from a running back. Achane had played six total offensive snaps in the first two games of the season. Then in Week 3 he scored 51.3 PPR points as he ran for 203 yards with two touchdowns, and caught four passes for 30 yards with two touchdowns. Achane saw more opportunity after Salvon Ahmed was listed as inactive in Week 3. Ahmed could return this week, but after Achane's performance it's hard to image Ahmed seeing more playing time. Achane is a little risky this week just because his breakout performance was so unexpected, and he also draws a tough matchup against a Bills defense that hasn't allowed a rushing or receiving touchdown to a running back this year. But given last week's effort, Achane can be viewed as an RB3/flex option with upside.

MIA RB Devon Achane - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Devon Achane is expected to have a major role in Miami’s offense as a rookie. He’s a versatile player who ended up being the only Power 5 player to score as a rusher, receiver, and return man in 2022. Achane features elite speed as he led all running backs at the NFL Combine this year with a 4.32 40-yard dash. He used that speed to run past defenses with an astounding 6.4 yards per carry on 369 carries in his college career. Achane also has skills as a receiving back, averaging a solid 3.6 receptions per game in his final season. Achane is a very talented player who landed in a great spot as coach Mike McDaniel knows how to utilize speed.

Fantasy Downside
While Achane has a lot of promise heading into 2023, he is still a rookie after all. He joins a Dolphins offense that retained veteran running backs Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr., both of whom had big roles in 2022. Plus there’s a looming threat that Miami will bring in another veteran back like Dalvin Cook or Ezekiel Elliott. Achane also has a small frame, being 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds. He’s not really built for carrying the ball 20+ times a game as a bell cow.

2023 Bottom Line
The Dolphins only had four NFL Draft picks in 2023, and they spent a 3rd-rounder on a running back. That’s pretty telling, and it indicates McDaniel and the coaching staff like what they have in Achane. His elite speed will undoubtedly result in some breakout big plays. The big question when it comes to Achane is volume. If he can see enough touches to stay consistently productive, then he’ll be someone you’ll want on your roster. Achane should be viewed around the RB30 mark, which makes him a strong value given his current ADP.
