Scouting report

NYG TE Darren Waller - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at San Francisco 49ers

Darren Waller had a quality outing against the Cardinals last week, catching six of his eight targets for 76 yards. Waller also had five targets in Week 1, despite a dismal offensive performance overall by the Giants, and he clearly has a nice rapport with Daniel Jones already. He’s one of the few tight ends with consistent and significant usage.

This week, Waller has a tough matchup against the 49ers, who allowed a touchdown to a tight end in Week 1, but limited Tyler Higbee to just 12 yards on three receptions in Week 2. Still, the Giants are expected to play from behind and Waller is their best receiving target, so he should get enough volume to put in a quality fantasy day. Start him.

NYG TE Darren Waller - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Arizona Cardinals

Darren Waller and the rest of the Giants’ offense was steamrolled by the Cowboys last week, but there were a few positive signs. Waller led the team with 36 receiving yards on three receptions and he was targeted five times. He and quarterback Daniel Jones seem to already have a nice rapport, and Waller has rare talent and volume potential for the position.

The Cardinals allowed five catches and 60 receiving yards to the Washington tight end group last week. Those aren’t bad numbers for a fantasy tight end, and Waller should be even better given his superior skill set. Waller sounds like he expects to be active and with the targets he’s likely to get, he should be active in all league formats.

NYG TE Darren Waller - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Dallas Cowboys

Darren Waller was hampered by injuries last season and limited to just nine games and 388 yards. The Giants traded for him anyway and he appears healthy to start the season. He already has looked like a favorite receiver for Daniel Jones, catching three of four targets in very limited preseason work. Waller has always been a target hog and it seems he’ll continue that role in a new uniform.

Waller starts his Giants tenure with a tough matchup against the Cowboys, who ranked sixth in aFPA to opposing tight ends a year ago and have several quality coverage defensive backs who have been effective against the position - including Jayron Kearse. Still, Waller is the most talented pass-catcher aside from Saquon Barkley in New York and his expected target share combined with the scarcity of options at the position make him a must-start in all leagues.

Update: Watch the injury report, as Waller has been added to it heading into the weekend. If he missed the game, Daniel Bellinger becomes a viable streaming option.

NYG TE Darren Waller - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Darren Waller was limited to just nine games last season in an injury-marred year with a struggling Raiders’ offense. While he had a strong 13.9 yards per reception in the games he did play, his volume was massively impacted by the arrival of Davante Adams, receiving just 4.8 targets per game, down from 8.5 in 2021. Waller was shipped off to the Giants, who could use a reliable target in the passing game outside of running back Saquon Barkley. The Giants have made quality fantasy targets out of tight ends in the past, and Waller should get ample opportunity to challenge to be the target leader in New York.

Fantasy Downside
Health has been an issue the past two seasons for the soon-to-be-31-year-old, and it’s possible we’re seeing Waller on the downside of his career. He’s now two full seasons removed from his elite 2020 season, and he finished just 10th (2022) and eighth (2021) in half-PPR fantasy points per game the past two years.

2023 Bottom Line
It’s possible Daniel Jones and Brian Daboll are able to revive Waller’s career as an elite fantasy tight end, but he’s no longer a sure bet for a full season of production. Fantasy managers should weigh the upside of his potential target share with the downside of his age and new environment carefully. Luckily, this is baked into his ADP, where our multi-site tool has him going in the middle rounds. We have him ranked fifth among tight ends, making him a potential steal at his current draft slot.

LV TE Darren Waller - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. San Francisco 49ers

Darren Waller had four catches for 58 yards last week against the Steelers. He’s clearly still a part of this offense after missing over two months of the season with an injury.

Waller has a tough matchup this week against a 49ers defense that ranks fourth in aFPA to opposing tight ends. If Derek Carr were behind center, Waller’s talent alone would put him as a solid TE1 option, but with the questions surrounding how Jarrett Stidham will perform, we have Waller ranked just outside starter territory. Be cautious with him.

LV TE Darren Waller - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Pittsburgh Steelers

Darren Waller returned to action last week after a lengthy injury absence and he found the end zone in a crazy victory over the Patriots. He finished with only three catches, but 48 yards and a score were good enough for him to finish as the TE6 for the week. Waller has as much upside as anyone, when healthy, and he’s a welcome addition to the bleak options at the tight end position.

This week, Waller faces a Steelers defense that ranks 14th in aFPA to opposing tight ends. He’s risky, but so is every other tight end not named Travis Kelce, so we have him ranked inside our top 10 tight ends for Week 16. Start him.

LV TE Darren Waller - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Jacksonville Jaguars

Darren Waller hasn’t played since October 2nd and he’s only averaging 43.8 yards and four receptions in his four games this season, with one total touchdown. Waller also is playing for a struggling Las Vegas offense that was blanked last week by the Saints and he’s coming off a hamstring issue as well.

Assuming Waller starts – not a given – he has upside against a Jaguars defense that ranks eighth in aFPA to opposing tight ends, but just allowed a TE8 fantasy performance to Greg Dulcich last week. We have him as a fringe-starter this week, but be sure to monitor his status up until game time and have a backup option available in case he’s a late scratch.
