Eagles place RB Wendell Smallwood on IR, promote RB Byron Marshall

The Eagles promoted running back Byron Marshall from the practice squad to take Wendell Smallwood’s spot on the 53-man roster.

Smallwood was placed on injured reserve Monday with a knee injury. Marshall, a former Oregon standout, spent the offseason and preseason with the Eagles and has been on practice squad all year.

Darren Sproles is in the league-mandated concussion protocol, leaving the Eagles even thinner at running back. Ryan Mathews and Kenjon Barner are the top only other running backs on the roster, so Marshall could play Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens if Sproles has not recovered from the concussion.

Fantasy Impact: 

Mathews figures to get the bulk of the work but the Eagles have used as many as four RBs in games this year. Marshall likely won't get enough work to warrant a start in just about any format.

Doug Pederson offered a lengthy update on the Eagles’ injury situation following Philadelphia’s Week 14 loss to the Washington Redskins. According to Pederson, four players suffered potential season-ending injuries on Sunday: long snapper Jon Dorenbos, rookie running back Wendell Smallwood (knee), reserve tackle Matt Tobin, and backup defensive back Jaylen Watkins. Pederson said all four players are candidates to be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list.

Fantasy Impact: 

Smallwood is out due to a right knee Grade 2 MCL sprain. Pederson called it a “lengthy injury.” Kenjon Barner was out in Week 14 and Darren Sproles suffered a concussion leaving Ryan Mathews as the lone healthy RB last week.

Eagles RB Wendell Smallwood suffered knee injury

Eagles rookie running back Wendell Smallwood was knocked from Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins with a right-knee injury.

Smallwood suffered the injury in the second quarter and was downgraded to 'out' after halftime.

Fantasy Impact: 

In Smallwood's absence, wide receiver Nelson Agholor took over kickoff return duties from the rookie fifth-round draft choice out of West Virginia. Darren Sproles was also injured fielding a punt, leaving Ryan Mathews to take all of the snaps from the RB position later in the game.

Philadelphia Eagles star Darren Sproles left Sunday's game against the Redskins in the fourth quarter after a scary and dangerous hit on a punt return.

Washington's Deshazor Everett leveled Sproles before he caught the ball, and he had to be helped from the locker room.

Fantasy Impact: 

Sproles never returned after taking the shot. His status for Week 15 is certainly up in the air. The Eagles also lost Wendell Smallwood to a knee injury leaving Ryan Mathews to carry the load later in the game.
