Scouting report

SF QB Colin Kaepernick - Week 6, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Baltimore
Kaepernick might be the most agonizing QB play in fantasy football. A week after back-to-back horrid games, he put up 262 yards and two scores last week against the Giants. Add in 23 rushing yards and you have a pretty good day. This week, he faces a putrid Baltimore defense at home. The Ravens have allowed nine TD passes in their past four games and have given up at least 351 passing yards in three of those games. This isn't to say Kaepernick is going to put up those kind of yards, but he should have some success against fantasy football's 30th rated pass defense.

SF QB Colin Kaepernick - Week 5, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Giants
Kaepernick had 160 passing yards and failed to throw a TD pass for the third time in four games this season. Even the two TDs he has thrown this season have come in garbage time. He did scramble 10 times for 57 yards last week but perhaps it's time to cut bait with him if he can't gain any traction this week against the Giants. New York is dead last in pass defense, having allowed at least 274 passing yards in all four games this season. The Giants have, however, given up just six TD passes despite all the yards. Kaepernick, though, just isn't somebody you want to have in your lineup.

SF QB Colin Kaepernick - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs Green Bay
Kaepernick hit rock bottom last week at Arizona - at least that's the hope - throwing for just 67 yards and throwing four picks while completing just nine passes. That he rushed for 47 yards and a touchdown was small consolation for the 49ers or anyone who had him in the starting lineup. He's thrown just two touchdown passes this season, both of those coming in garbage time in a rout by the Steelers. It doesn't get any easier for the 49ers this week hosting Green Bay, but at least the Packers have given up four TD passes in their first three games. You have to figure Kaepernick will be better at home this week, as he's going to have to sling it around a bit to try to keep up with Aaron Rodgers. It should add up to at least a tolerable day for Kaepernick in terms of fantasy, even if it doesn't add up to a win for the 49ers.

SF QB Colin Kaepernick - Week 3, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Arizona
Kaepernick's final numbers from last week of 335 yards and two touchdowns with another 51 yards rushing were great in the fantasy world, buut much of it came in the fourth quarter in garbage time. That might not mean much if you had him in your lineup, but the dink and dunk nature of San Francisco's offense is troubling. Yes, Kaepernick's completion percentage is better, but he's throwing a lot of sideways passes. The Cardinals have given up just two passing touchdowns this season. Kaepernick is a borderline starter this week, thanks mostly to his rushing totals. He threw for just 449 total yards and three scores in two starts against Arizona last season, but did rush for 117 yards.

SF QB Colin Kaepernick - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Pittsburgh
Kaepernick looked good throwing the ball last week. He just didn't throw it enough to be much of a fantasy factor, going for 165 passing yards and 41 rushing yards on seven rushes. Considering Kaepernick is not Tom Brady, I wouldn't expect him to throw 4 TD passes as Brady did last week against the Steelers. Brady did most of his damage with his tight ends, as well, and Kaepernick just doesn't use Vernon Davis enough for that to happen here. He's a fantasy backup this week.

SF QB Colin Kaepernick - Week 1, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Minnesota
Kaepernick remains a fantasy tease and we won't likely see a change this week. How so? In 2014, he had just six games in which he produced multiple touchdowns, which is too few for a player with his skill set. The 49ers receiving corps and running back rotation will be different this season, so we'll have to wait and see how things are affected as the season goes on. Kaepernick isn't a strong fantasy start this week against an improving Minnesota defense.

SF QB Colin Kaepernick - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
With what should be an improved receiver group with speedy Torrey Smith added to the equation, Colin Kaepernick has no more excuses not to be a 4,000-total yard QB who produces on a weekly basis.

Fantasy Downside
We haven't seen the consistency yet. Kaepernick produced 10 games with 220 yards or fewer passing in 2014 and also didn't run as much until a late-season 151-yard effort made his rushing numbers appear better than they actually were.

Bottom line
Kaepernick's ADP this season is in rounds 12 to 14, so it's not like most owners are going to be counting on him as their starter as he was last season when he disappointed. With a better overall supporting cast, he should bounce back some this season, but outside of a game here or a game there, he's not likely to be a fantasy star, especially not having to face the tough defenses in his division six times per year.
