Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) did not practice Wednesday. Stewart may be able to return this week, though the Panthers #1 priority is to get him healthy for a postseason run. Last week, Cameron Artis-Payne out-touched Mike Tolbert and Fozzy Whittaker by a margin of 16-to-9. If Stewart remains out, we expect Artis-Payne to serve as the lead back in a nice matchup with the Falcons.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 15. It’s not completely clear who is the best start with Stewart out. HC Ron Rivera said early in the week that either Fozzy Whittaker or Mike Tolbert would start, but later in the week he said that he expects Cameron Artis-Payne to “play early” on Sunday. Of the 75 non-Stewart carries this year, Tolbert has seen 45 (60%), Whittaker 18 (24%) and Artis-Payne 12 (16%), but Artis-Payne hasn’t been active lately. Last week, Whittaker out-touched Tolbert 9-to-8, but the game was a blowout, so don’t read too much into it. We feel that Tolbert has the best chance to find the end zone, so he’s probably the best play.

The Panthers have talked about giving him rest down the stretch, but they don’t have home field advantage locked up at this point. Complicating matters, it’s not completely clear who is the best start with Stewart out. There was an ESPN report in early December that Cameron Artis-Payne would take over as the lead back, but he hasn’t even been active the last few weeks, and continues to play behind Mike Tolbert and Fozzy Whittaker. If Stewart sits, we’d probably get a three-headed committee. Of the 75 non-Stewart carries this year, Tolbert has seen 45 (60%), Whittaker 18 (24%) and Artis-Payne 12 (16%), but Artis-Payne hasn’t been active lately.
