Offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said he had to change plans for backup running back Brian Westbrook when the 49ers fell behind early in the second half and went into their two-minute offense in the season opener.

"There's a role on the offense for him (Westbrook)," Raye said. "He's Frank Gore's backup. That's his role. As the game unfolded, the plan to insert him into the game and take some of the reps off of Frank turned when we got into a two-minute offense (in the third quarter)."

Raye said he was more comfortable using Gore in single-back sets because of his familiarity with the 49ers' protection schemes. Westbrook, a two-time Pro Bowl player with the Philadelphia Eagles, did not play one snap in the season opener.
