The Washington Redskins fear that free safety Kareem Moore could be sidelined four to six weeks after suffering what initially appears to be a sprained right medial collateral ligament, two people familiar with the situation said early Sunday morning.
Moore's injury occurred in the second quarter Saturday night during a 23-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens at FedEx Field. The third-year player went down without being hit while in pursuit of Haruki Nakamura, who ran 51 yards on a direct-snapped fake punt.
"I was running and then I just felt something and then I just went down," Moore said. "I just felt kind of awkward on the play; no hit or anything."
Team medical personnel who examined Moore determined he probably sprained his MCL, and they expect to receive confirmation after Sunday's MRI exam, the team sources said.
Barring an unexpectedly favorable MRI report, the Redskins plan to proceed as if Moore will be sidelined for the regular-season opener Sept. 12 against the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys at FedEx Field.
The initial diagnosis of the injury stirred concern in the organization because Moore was the star of training camp, the sources said. He displayed outstanding deep ball skills while intercepting many passes in practice at Redskins Park.
