A Colts player spent his only day off from camp behind bars.

Defensive lineman John Gill was arrested for public intoxication early Sunday morning in west Indianapolis.

Gill, who wears number 69, was on the sidelines for Saturday morning's Blue vs. White scrimmage at training camp in Anderson. By Sunday morning, he was on the side of the road in Indianapolis, found by police passed out and unable to stand on his own.

Police say they don't know where Gill came from or how he ended up in the 3600 block of Lafayette Road. There was no car and, according to police reports, he didn't even have any shoes on.

The police report did say he was wearing a blue shirt and khaki shorts, which police described as disheveled and soiled when they found him in a ditch on Lafayette Road just after 4 a.m. Sunday.

Officers say he was unable to stand up, fell several times and that they could smell a strong odor of alcohol and his speech was slurred.

Gill is in his second year with the Colts and was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster late last year. He joined his teammates as they held their first week of camp in Anderson this week.

Sunday was the only day off for the team and Gill spent much of it in the custody of police, facing charges of public intoxication.

Craig Kelley, a spokesman for the Colts organization, said only, "We are aware there is an incident. We do not have details and will have no comment."

With Colts camp to resume Monday, it's unclear whether Gill will be ready or able to rejoin the team. Training camp continues Monday in Anderson with practices at 8:30 am and 3:30 pm.
