Back in his home state of South Dakota making an appearance at the Legends Sports Clinics, Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway wasn’t anxious to talk about contracts and other money matters.
But Greenway raised eyebrows in the Twin Cities by sitting out most of a three-day minicamp last weekend, so the subject was bound to come up.
Was his absence related to the fact that his five-year rookie contract expires after the 2010 season and no extension is yet on the table?
"There’s nothing related at all," said the 27-year-old Mount Vernon native, who led the Vikings with 99 tackles in 2009. "There is no contract issue at all. Coach (Brad) Childress gave me some time off for the minicamp, and that’s really all that matters."
Greenway is reportedly set to make just more than $3 million in 2010.
"With the scope of where the NFL is right now, with a looming lockout and things uncertain, as a player I think you have to be open-minded about what’s going to happen," he said. "Of course you’d like to have your long-term future under control and in the bag. But at the same time it’s a business. I signed a five-year contract, and I’m going to play it out to the best of my ability. The Vikings have been very good to me."
