Panthers GM Marty Hurney said the Panthers re-signed Delhomme because “he fits into our formula.”
Hurney supported Delhomme throughout, but did express some concern about the veteran’s confidence if continues to struggle.
“I think confidence becomes the issue,” Hurney told Packer. “I think whether it’s with an individual or a football team, is the confidence level you play at. I don’t want to think about that (him failing). I know Jake Delhomme is a good quarterback in this league and that he has proven he can win games for us and will continue to win games for us.”
He said Delhomme gives the team stability while it develops another young quarterback.
He talked about the team’s decision to release Steve Beuerlein in 2000 backfired with the team going 1-15 the following year with rookie Chris Weinke at the helm.
“I think I catch criticism for giving Jake Delhomme a contract extension, but I think the more valid criticism will be if we don’t find that young quarterback, that guy behind him to bring up that is ready to be our guy, whether it’s a Matt Moore or Hunter Cantwell,” Hurney told Packer. “But Jake is still a very good quarterback and still the leader of this football team and good enough to win football games.”
As for Delhomme, Hurney added, “Jake needs to play better. He knows that. I know that. Everybody knows that. He can’t turn the ball over seven times or throw four interceptions. But Philadelphia did a great job of getting pressure.”
