Eagles fire head coach Chip Kelly

The Eagles fired head coach Chip Kelly on Tuesday evening.

Owner Jeffrey Lurie made the stunning announcement in a statement released by the team, and he will address reporters on Wednesday.

“We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward,” Lurie said.

Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will be the interim head coach on Sunday against the New York Giants.

Fantasy Impact:

It's a surprise move because many felt Kelly would at least get next year to make improvements, but he doesn't even make it to Black Monday. Those who cover the team feel Kelly's comments Monday when he said "he's not the GM" may have done him in, because Kelly has not taken a lot of responsibility for the team's struggles this season and does have full control of the roster. Kelly made big moves over the last two years, like trading LeSean McCoy, releasing DeSean Jackson and trading Nick Foles, and a lot of the replacements didn't live up to the hype. That's especially the case for DeMarco Murray, who seemed like a spur of the moment signing after losing out on Frank Gore to the Colts. Murray clearly hasn't been a fit in Kelly's offense. Murray would be a huge cap hit if the Birds released him so it's possible the new coach builds the offense around Murray's strengths a little more. Sam Bradford is a pending free agent and the team needs to address the offensive line as well as the outside wide receivers in the offseason.
