Chargers easing Ryan Mathews back into action

If Ryan Mathews had not fumbled against the Falcons, it is expected the Pro Bowler would have started against the Chiefs. While the mishap did not reduce Turner's long-term confidence in Mathews, it did make it evident that Mathews, after missing six weeks with a broken clavicle, would best be eased into action.

That process began Sunday with a series of lower-leverage opportunities.

Most his work instead came with the victory fairly decided in the fourth quarter when he totaled 11 of his 16 touches for 68 yards. For the game, he was in on 21 plays compared to Battle's 27.

Fantasy Impact:

Mathews watched as Jackie Battle and the Bolts drove down the field for a TD and he watched again when the team was backed up against the goal line. The article said this isn't expected to continue as long as Mathews continues to "prove he's ready for work in more critical situations."

"Depending on the flow of the game" Mathews could get more work this week against the Saints. And, Battle seems to have taken over the backup role from Ronnie Brown and Curtis Brinkley.
