Panthers RB Jordan Scarlett looks to be team's RB2

Cameron Artis-Payne was released Friday during the Panthers' final cuts.

The Panthers upped the ante in April, selecting Jordan Scarlett (5-foot-10, 209 pounds) in the fifth round out of Florida with the hope he had the all-around skills to give starter Christian McCaffrey a break without losing much in terms of production. They also added undrafted back Elijah Holyfield out of Georgia (Update: Holyfield was released after initially making the 53-man roster.)

Fantasy Impact:

It's worth nothing Scarlett is the team's RB behind McCaffrey, even though McCaffrey played on 91.3% of the snaps last season. The story said to truly be a backup to McCaffrey, Scarlett will have to become an effective pass-catcher, something he didn't do much and struggled with while at Florida.

Cameron Artis-Payne had a great game against the Bucs on Monday night, carrying the ball 18 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns. While that production was encouraging, it’s unlikely to be repeated any time soon. Jonathan Stewart’s return is looming, and with Cam Newton back in the lineup instead of Derek Anderson, Artis-Payne will likely get less red zone carries.

If Stewart is a no-go and Artis-Payne starts again, then he has some upside against the Saints this week. While the game will likely feature more passing than last week’s low-scoring affair with the Bucs, the Saints have allowed eight rushing touchdowns this year, tied for the most in the league. Newton will steal some of those looks, but in standard or TD-only leagues, if Stewart is out again, Artis-Payne has low-end RB3 value.
