Week 1 DraftKings & FanDuel Showdown Strategy: Sunday Night NFL DFS for Cowboys @ Giants

Football is officially back, and with it comes the start of showdown season. Sunday Night Football kicks off with one of the most significant rivalry games in the NFL, between two teams with two of the league’s largest fanbases. Showdown contests are one-game contests that allow fantasy players to optimize for, essentially, a single-game runout. With the rollout of sim products, the way to think about playing optimally is to embrace variance and build lineups around a reasonable game environment or structure that would result in a given lineup being optimal. Ultimately, when breaking down a slate heuristically or from a general analysis / ball-knowledge perspective, this is a sound way to anchor your thinking.

How I Plan to Beat the Field This Week

Both the Cowboys and Giants offenses have a variety of talented weapons that should be considered both generally and for the captain spot. Much of the ownership is likely to consolidate around the teams’ passing offenses, including some of the highest-salary players on the slate—primarily their quarterbacks and top receivers.

But showdowns characteristically have higher-than-optimal ownership on the highest-projected captains despite variable outcomes. In this one, I think a great way to build positive-expected-value lineups without opting for a “chalky” elite-tier captain is to fade the passing games and opt for one of the teams’ primary running backs.

When we look to optimize for a run-heavy game, this means stacking fewer receivers than is typical and likely targeting a defense in the flex. I plan to allocate a significant portion of my portfolio to lineups that include these combinations.
