2021 Mayakoba Championship: Round 2 Matchups

Upon first glance, El Camaleon Golf Course does not appear to be a good fit for Matthew Wolff's "bomb and gauge" type of game. The course is short, fairways are tight and hazards abound to swallow wayward drives. In Thursday's opening round, though, Wolff adapted, hitting his driver on only one hole. He ended up shooting the course record—a 10-under par 61 to take the lead by two shots. Aaron Wise rode a hot putting performance (third-best in the field) to an 8-under score and he is currently in second place. Behind those two, Chris Kirk, Billy Horschel, Sergio Garcia and Talor Gooch each sit three shots back at 7-under. Overall, scoring was much lower than we have seen here over the past couple of years at 1.72 strokes under-par. With perfect weather conditions again tomorrow, the cut-line could be as low as 4-under. With no ShotLink data again this week, there is no Strokes Gained chart to analyze for matchups. We will again rely on stats like GIR%, Driving Accuracy and overall player talent.
