Fantasy Upside
Jaylen Waddle was used in a much different fashion in 2022 compared to 2021. Waddle actually saw fewer receptions in his second season (75 compared to 104 despite one more game played), but finished with more receiving yards (1,356 compared to 1,015). Waddle’s yards per catch leaped from 9.8 to 18.1 (his 18.1 ypc led the league). Miami maintains the same coaching staff and mostly the same WR group, meaning Waddle should have a similar role in 2023. He’s set up for another productive season.
Fantasy Downside
Waddle saw 117 total targets in 2022, but only eight of those were in the red zone. For comparison, Justin Jefferson led WRs in that category with 28 red zone targets. An external concern for Waddle will be the health of QB Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa missed time in 2022 due to concussions, and that remains a worry heading into 2023. In games without Tagovailoa last season, Waddle mostly struggled with lines like 3-23-0, 3-52-0 and 5-44-0.
2023 Bottom Line
Our 2023 projections have Waddle mostly repeating what he did a season ago. Which makes sense considering not a whole lot has changed in Miami. Even though Waddle didn’t see many red zone looks last season, he still managed to score eight touchdowns due to his ability to create yards after the catch. Heading into his third season, Waddle could even improve slightly considering wide receivers start to hit their peak around this time in their career. Waddle should be viewed as a top-10 option at wide receiver.
