Scouting report

MIA WR Jaylen Waddle - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Los Angeles Chargers

Jaylen Waddle was used in a different way last season, which led to a career-high in receiving yards. Waddle had 29 fewer receptions in year two, but had 341 more yards. He proved that this offense has enough production to carry two top 10 options at wide receiver in fantasy. Waddle begins 2023 with a tough matchup vs. the Chargers, who gave up the 8th-fewest average fantasy points to WRs last season. Waddle struggled against L.A., finishing 2-31-0 against them last year. The matchup isn't great, but Waddle should still be viewed as a top 10 option at his position in Week 1. He's a must-start WR1.

MIA WR Jaylen Waddle - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Jaylen Waddle was used in a much different fashion in 2022 compared to 2021. Waddle actually saw fewer receptions in his second season (75 compared to 104 despite one more game played), but finished with more receiving yards (1,356 compared to 1,015). Waddle’s yards per catch leaped from 9.8 to 18.1 (his 18.1 ypc led the league). Miami maintains the same coaching staff and mostly the same WR group, meaning Waddle should have a similar role in 2023. He’s set up for another productive season.

Fantasy Downside
Waddle saw 117 total targets in 2022, but only eight of those were in the red zone. For comparison, Justin Jefferson led WRs in that category with 28 red zone targets. An external concern for Waddle will be the health of QB Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa missed time in 2022 due to concussions, and that remains a worry heading into 2023. In games without Tagovailoa last season, Waddle mostly struggled with lines like 3-23-0, 3-52-0 and 5-44-0.

2023 Bottom Line
Our 2023 projections have Waddle mostly repeating what he did a season ago. Which makes sense considering not a whole lot has changed in Miami. Even though Waddle didn’t see many red zone looks last season, he still managed to score eight touchdowns due to his ability to create yards after the catch. Heading into his third season, Waddle could even improve slightly considering wide receivers start to hit their peak around this time in their career. Waddle should be viewed as a top-10 option at wide receiver.

MIA WR Jaylen Waddle - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at New England Patriots

Jaylen Waddle started the game off with a bang as he hauled in and ran for an 84-yard touchdown on the Dolphins' second offensive drive of the game. He wasn't done after that, though, finishing 5-143-1 on six targets. This week, Waddle faces the Patriots, although he'll be doing it with Teddy Bridgewater as his QB. Waddle has limited playing time with Bridgewater this season, although the two played well in the game against the Vikings. Bridgewater targeted Waddle on seven of his 34 pass attempts. It's also worth noting when Waddle faced New England earlier in the year, he finished 4-69-1 on five targets. The QB change isn't ideal, but Waddle should still be viewed as a WR1 option for Week 17.

MIA WR Jaylen Waddle - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Green Bay Packers

Jaylen Waddle only had three receptions last week, but he sure made the most of them. Waddle finished with 114 yards and a touchdown. It was a nice bounce back game for Waddle who had hit a bit of a slump with two dud games prior to last week. Waddle did hit a bit of a rough patch, but he's still been one of the most productive wide receivers this season. He should continue to be viewed as an elite option as he heads into an OK matchup vs. the Packers (12th aFPA) in Week 16. Waddle is a top-10 option at WR this week.

MIA WR Jaylen Waddle - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Buffalo Bills

Jaylen Waddle had a letdown performance last week, finishing with just two catches for 31 yards on four targets. It's Waddle's second game in a row letting down fantasy owners as he finished 1-9 the week prior. Waddle could turn things around this week, though. He faces a Bills defense that's given up the 6th-most average fantasy points to wide receivers over the past four weeks. Waddle had success against Buffalo earlier in the year with 102 yards on four catches. He should be viewed as a strong WR2 play in Week 15.

MIA WR Jaylen Waddle - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Los Angeles Chargers

Jaylen Waddle struggled last week, finishing with one catch for nine yards on five targets. Waddle went down with a leg injury in the second quarter, and while he was able to return to the game, he clearly wasn't at 100%. Waddle got in a limited session of practice this week with what's being labelled as a fibula injury. His health will be worth monitoring as he enters a tough Week 14 matchup vs. the Chargers (6th aFPA). If he's active, he should still be viewed as a WR1 play. If Waddle is unable to go, then Trent Sherfield becomes an interesting option.

MIA WR Jaylen Waddle - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at San Francisco 49ers

Jaylen Waddle led the Dolphins in targets (10) last week, finishing 5-85. Waddle has been excellent in games where Tua Tagovailoa plays, averaging 5.6 receptions for 100 yards in the nine games where his former college QB played the majority of the snaps. Knowing that fact, Waddle should be viewed as a must-start WR1 in Week 13 in a solid matchup vs. the 49ers (20th aFPA).
