JAX RB Travis Etienne - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Philadelphia Eagles

Travis Etienne is still clearly the No. 2 back for the Jaguars behind James Robinson, although he did have his most rushing attempts in a game in Week 3. Etienne carried the ball 13 times for 45 yards, and for the second game in a row, he caught all three of his targets, giving him another 30 yards. Etienne posted 9.0 Half PPR points for an RB30 weekly finish. Through three weeks, Etienne averages 8.7 rushing attempts per game, with 37.3 yards and 7.8 Half PPR points. He's the RB37 so far.

The Eagles have been better against the pass than the run this season, although they've been up big in their last two games so teams have not been able to establish on the ground. They rank 12th in aFPA to running backs. Maybe the game script dictates the Jaguars to lean on the passing game some more, which could lead to more opportunities for Etienne. But he's so hard to trust at anything above low-end RB3 at the moment.

JAX RB Travis Etienne - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Los Angeles Chargers

It's not quite happening for Travis Etienne after two weeks of the 2022 season. He has just 13 carries after two games, a 24.1% share of the team's rush attempts, with nine of them bringing a mere 20 yards against the Colts. Etienne did catch all of his targets, but there were only three of them, and they brought him another 33 yards. All told, Etienne finished with 6.8 Half PPR points, less than 37 other running backs.

The Chargers are 19th in rushing yards allowed to running backs this season, but lead the NFL after allowing two running back receiving touchdowns. But it's hard to get too excited about Etienne as a fantasy option unless or until he starts eating into James Robinson's workload. He should be viewed as a low-end RB3 option against the Chargers.

JAX RB Travis Etienne - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Indianapolis Colts

Travis Etienne's NFL debut wasn't exactly one for the ages. He saw just four carries, despite racking up 47 yards, and his four targets brought him just two receptions for 18 yards. Etienne finished with 7.5 fantasy points in Half PPR formats, behind 37 other running backs in Week 1.

The Colts were fairly solid against the Texans running backs in Week 1, allowing just 73 yards on 25 carries and 41 yards on a combined seven receptions. If rushing attempts are anything to go by, Etienne is behind James Robinson at the moment and will need to be more efficient and productive with his receiving work if he is to make any fantasy noise. Etienne is just about an RB3 option this week.

JAX RB Travis Etienne - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Washington Commanders

Travis Etienne lost his entire rookie season to an injury suffered during the 2021 preseason. He seems to be over this and ready to go in Week 1 of his sophomore campaign, The Jaguars will be hoping to see the player that rushed for 4,952 yards at a 7.2 yards per attempt clip at Clemson, as well as the one with a nose for the end zone like Etienne had in college. He scored 70 rushing touchdowns for the Tigers.

Etienne may lead the Jaguars in touches, but he is likely to be sharing the backfield with James Robinson, assuming Robinson recovers from his own season-ending injury from 2021. As such, and coupled with their Week 1 opponents ranking 15th in aFPA to running backs a year ago, it's tough to project him as anything above a high-end RB3 against the Commanders.

JAX RB Travis Etienne - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
A Lisfranc injury in the second pre-season game knocked Travis Etienne Jr., a first-round pick, out for the entire 2021 season, but the speedy back told reporters he's 85-90 percent back from his injury and that he began feeling like himself in the last couple of weeks of March. The Jags' offense is in desperate need of speed, which the first-round pick provides if healthy. But will the new coaching staff have the same designs as Urban Meyer's for the all-purpose threat? In fact, they might have loftier goals. It appears new Jaguars coach Doug Pederson will push Etienne back -- primarily (and sensibly) -- to his natural position. It seems wise to use Etienne as a running back considering he rushed for nearly 5,000 yards and 70 touchdowns in his four years at Clemson. A true featured role would be the best-case scenario here.

2022 Fantasy Downside
James Robinson's return from a partially torn Achilles remains unclear. But once he's back, Robinson is expected to have a role in this backfield. Even if that role isn't as robust as he's had the last two years, it could be a limiting factor for Etienne.

2022 Bottom Line
According to The Athletic's Larry Holder, the new staff could have an Alvin Kamara-like role in mind for Etienne. If that's the case, expecting 180 carries and 100 targets as a receiver wouldn't be out of the question.

JAX RB Travis Etienne - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
With their second first-round pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jaguars went back to the Clemson well, landing Travis Etienne with the 25th overall pick. Pairing Trevor Lawrence, their choice at No. 1 overall, with Etienne marked the first time in the Common Draft era that a QB and RB from the same school were selected in the first round of the same draft by the same team. A home-run hitter, Etienne is the draft's best pass-catching back, but he can also run. Etienne had 2,571 rush yards after contact over the last three seasons (most in FBS), per Pro Football Focus. He also forced 187 missed tackles on rushes over the previous three seasons (most in FBS). The speedy Etienne is a perfect outlet for Lawrence and can excel in the screen game.

Fantasy Downside
Etienne pairs well with undrafted rookie running back James Robinson, who shined last year as a between-the-tackles runner. That timeshare adds a layer of uncertainty to the roles of both backs.

2021 Bottom Line
The Etienne-Robinson duo can both break tackles on the second level, which should help quickly turn around the Jags' offense. Incoming coach Urban Meyer called Etienne a "matchup issue" who can help the team as a runner and a receiver. His relationship with Lawrence may help him get a few more looks in the latter role once the team hits the field this year. But more to the point, Etienne has something Robinson doesn't: The ability to take it the house from anywhere on the field.
