MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Baltimore Ravens

Tua Tagovailoa had a solid Week 1 against the Patriots, finishing with 270 pass yards, 1 TD and no interceptions. It wasn't a dominating fantasy effort, but it was a nice outing against a tough defense. He gets a better matchup in Week 2 against the Ravens, who just gave up a 300-yard game to Joe Flacco (granted, he threw the ball 59 times). We'd expect a similar stat line from Tagovailoa. The Dolphins QB will be a nice streaming option once quarterbacks are on bye, but with so many other options, Tagovailoa is more in QB20 range for Week 2. He's not a horrible choice, but there are better options available.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. New England Patriots

Tua Tagovailoa enters a make-or-break year with Miami. He has a new coach, a top-tier weapon in Tyreek Hill, and it's just a big season for him to showcase if he's legit or not. Unfortunately he faces a brutal Patriots defense in Week 1. New England gave up the second-fewest average fantasy points to quarterbacks a season ago. Tagovailoa struggled in both of his matchups vs. the Patriots, finishing with 202 yards, 2 TD (one passing, one rushing) and 1 INT in the first matchup, and 109 yards, 1 TD in the second. We'd expect a similar performance of around 200 pass yards with 1 TD in Week 1, making Tagovailoa not so great of an option. He should be viewed around QB20 this week.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Tua Tagovailoa stepped up in his sophomore season, upping his stats in touchdown percentage, pass yards per game, completion percentage and yards per attempt. And in year three, he gets a lot more help in supporting talent with the arrival of Tyreek Hill. Miami also added free agent WR Cedrick Wilson Jr., 4th-round rookie WR Erik Ezukanma, RB Chase Edmonds, and RB Raheem Mostert. The Dolphins’ offensive line also saw some additional help with the arrival of Terron Armstead and Connor Williams. Last season, Tagovailoa managed (in the 11 games he played 93%+ of the snaps) to score 15.3 points per game. With an improved offense, Tagovailoa is set up to have a career year in Miami.

2022 Fantasy Downside
While Tagovailoa took a step forward last season, it was more of a baby step. He finished the season playing at least 90% of the snaps in the final seven games and in that span he averaged just barely above 200 yards passing per game with a 9-to-6 TD-to-turnover ratio. And while the Dolphins added a lot of weapons on offense, their offensive line is still a cause of concern. 4for4’s Justin Edwards ranked them 24th in the league. Last season, Tagovailoa had on average just 2.5 seconds to throw, which was one of the lowest marks in the league. There’s also a worry of Tagovailoa staying healthy. He entered the league with health issues and has in two seasons suffered an ankle sprain, thumb sprain, fractured ribs and a finger fracture.

2022 Bottom Line
This is a make-or-break year for Tagovailoa. Miami has certainly undergone a lot of changes this offseason, most notably bringing in Tyreek Hill and new head coach Mike McDaniel. With Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Mike Gesicki and everyone else, the ceiling is high for Tagovailoa. But he still needs to actually prove he can get it done. Tagovailoa has the potential to become a top 10 QB in fantasy this season. But heading into the year, he should be viewed more around the QB15 range, making him an interesting candidate around Round 10.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Tennessee Titans

Tua Tagovailoa played great from a football standpoint last week, but didn't have a productive fantasy day. He finished with just 198 pass yards, one touchdown and an interception. It's his second consecutive game finishing just shy of 200 pass yards. He'll get an easier task this week as he faces a Titans defense giving up the 9th-most average fantasy points to quarterbacks. Tagovailoa has been OK, but he's outside the top 20 QBs in average fantasy points per game and 27th in total points scored for QBs. He's usually good for just over 200 pass yards with a chance for two scores. Nothing amazing, but he has been pretty consistent if you're just looking for a safe bet. Tagovailoa ranks around the QB15 mark for Week 17.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at New Orleans Saints

Tua Tagovailoa got off to a horrible start last week, but he managed to turn in an OK fantasy performance. Tagovailoa finished with 196 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He seemed to struggle somewhat with Jaylen Waddle out of the lineup, but Waddle will be returning in Week 16 against the Saints. Tagovailoa finally has a healthy set of wideouts with Waddle and DeVante Parker back together, and he'll get a favorable matchup this week against the Saints. In the five games since Miami's bye, Tagovailoa has scored at least one touchdown in every game and two touchdowns in three games. He's not a QB who is likely to pop off for a huge performance, but he's usually a safe bet to not completely bust. He's a viable streaming option around the QB15 range in Week 16.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. New York Jets

Tua Tagovailoa had a solid game ahead of the Dolphins' Week 14 bye, throwing for 244 yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers. He'll look to build on that success this week against the Jets, a team he had success against just a few weeks ago. In Week 11, Tagovailoa threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns against New York. If he's able to repeat that performance, he'll be a very strong fantasy play in Week 15. The bad news for Tagovailoa, though, is he'll be without Jaylen Waddle who was placed on the team's COVID/Reserve list. Still, it's a favorable matchup vs. the Jets and the Dolphins' receiver group is strong. We like Tagovailoa as a top 12 option at QB this week.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. New York Giants

Tua Tagovailoa looked good in real-life football last week against a tough Panthers defense, but had just an OK fantasy outing with 230 yards, one touchdown and no turnovers. We're projecting a similar performance from Tagovailoa this week as he faces the Giants. The Giants have been a surprisingly tough defense on quarterbacks this year, giving up an 18-13 TD-INT ratio. Tagovailoa won't be a horrible option, but he's outside of our top 15 quarterbacks for the week. He's a somewhat safe play in the sense that we wouldn't expect him to have an awful game. But if you need a lot of points, it's hard to imagine Tagovailoa lighting the scoreboard up this week.
