Scouting report

KC TE Travis Kelce - Week 9, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 – Travis Kelce vs. New York Jets
It was a case of so close, yet so far away for Travis Kelce last weekend. Kelce finished with four receptions for 45 yards, but his day could have been much better as he was stopped on the one-yard line after one of his catches. The Jets have given up 22 touchdown passes, the most in the NFL by a wide margin. The matchup keeps Travis in TE1 territory.

KC TE Travis Kelce - Week 8, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 – Travis Kelce vs. St. Louis Rams
Fantasy owners are feeling frustration with Travis Kelce, but it has nothing to do with Travis himself. Rather, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid continues to limit Kelce’s usage despite the fact he may be the best receiver on the team outside of running back Jamaal Charles. It was especially disappointing last weekend to see the Chiefs running spread formations with Kelce on the sidelines and their goof troop of receivers taking center stage. Travis finished with four receptions for 33 yards. Regardless, he offers special potential if everything breaks right, keeping him in the TE1 ranks.

KC TE Travis Kelce - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 – Travis Kelce at San Diego Chargers
It was thought going into the season that Travis Kelce could take some of the pressure off Dwayne Bowe. Instead, Kelce has usurped Bowe and emerged as Alex Smith’s top target, with 20 receptions for 274 yards and three touchdowns. What’s most amazing about his production is that he isn’t even playing a full complement of snaps. San Diego has defended tight ends well, but when you consider they have played Arizona, Seattle, Buffalo, Jacksonville, the New York Jets, and Oakland, that is not surprising. Kelce will give them a stiff test and projects as a solid TE1.

KC TE Travis Kelce - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – Travis Kelce at San Francisco 49ers
Second-year tight end Travis Kelce seems to love coming out parties, because he’s been throwing one every week since a slow start on opening day. He caught eight passes for 93 yards and a touchdown during Kansas City’s 41-14 thrashing of New England on Monday night. Although San Francisco is not the easiest of matchups, Kelce has moved into the TE1 zone and should remain a solid starter this weekend.

KC TE Travis Kelce - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 – Travis Kelce vs. New England Patriots
Travis Kelce continues to find his way into the good graces of fantasy owners. In week three, he caught three passes for 36 yards and a touchdown. Kelce leads Kansas City in receiving yards. His ceiling will continue to rise, but his upside will be somewhat limited against New England’s elite pass defense. Nonetheless, Kelce has played himself into low-end TE1 territory and would be an acceptable starter for your squad despite the unfavorable matchup.

KC TE Travis Kelce - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Travis Kelce at Miami Dolphins
It is no secret that Travis Kelce was classified as a disappointment after the first week of the season. But game two brought better things, as Kelce caught four passes for 81 yards. His rapport with Alex Smith is definitely growing, which is good as Smith needs all the help he can get. With Kansas City still in run-first mode, Travis could remain a hit-or-miss player. Still, he is inching closer to TE1 territory. Ultimately, he has not quite made it there yet, which means you need to look elsewhere for a starter this week.

KC TE Travis Kelce - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Travis Kelce at Denver Broncos

Heading into week one, many felt Travis Kelce was the equivalent of a volcano ready to erupt. However, the lava never flowed as Kelce had a modest afternoon, catching three passes for 49 yards. The real disappointment was seeing fellow tight end Anthony Fasano catch Alex Smith’s lone touchdown pass.

There is still some hope for Kelce. Dwayne Bowe is back, which means defenses will be shifting their focus in his direction. And the Broncos gave up a 41-yard touchdown to Indianapolis tight end Dwayne Allen. Nevertheless, Kelce should be on your bench until he shows he can live up to the hype.
