Scouting report

CAR QB Sam Darnold - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Atlanta Falcons

Sam Darnold is getting worse every week. He had a woeful 111 yards and a pick against the Giants last week before he was benched in favor of P.J. Walker. After a great start to the season, Darnold has now lost four straight games and thrown seven interceptions in that time. The Panthers’ offense looked completely dysfunctional as the Giants destroyed them 25-3. Even though he has a great matchup against the Falcons this week, counting on him as anything better than a desperation QB2 option is dangerous. Sit him. Drop him.

CAR QB Sam Darnold - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at New York Giants

Sam Darnold had 207 yards, a touchdown and a pick last week against the Vikings. It was a forgettable day for Darnold – although he did add 48 yards on the ground – as the Panthers dropped to 3-3 on the season and he was sacked four times. Darnold seems like who we thought he was heading into the season: a matchup option who can’t be trusted as an every-week starter.

The matchup favors him this week against a Giants defense that ranks 23rd in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. New York is riddled with injuries on both sides of the ball, giving Darnold some upside for this week. We have him ranked as a fringe starter, and he should be considered a viable streaming option for teams with bye week issues.

CAR QB Sam Darnold - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Sam Darnold came crashing back to earth last week against the Eagles, throwing for just 177 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. After putting up borderline top-five numbers through the first four weeks – heavily aided by five rushing touchdowns – it seemed inevitable Darnold’s numbers would normalize. The real Darnold is likely somewhere in between the dreadful showing we saw last week, and the four previous games.

This week, Darnold faces a hot-and-cold Vikings defense that ranks ninth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. The Vikings shut down Jared Goff last week, but that was Jared Goff and the Lions, so it’s hard to figure out exactly how good they are. Likewise, with a shaky Baker Mayfield in Week 4. Expect Darnold to bounce back a bit, but to normalize into a fringe, matchup-based starter. We have him ranked just outside of QB1 territory this week, making him a viable streaming option against Minnesota.

CAR QB Sam Darnold - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Sam Darnold threw for 301 yards, two touchdowns and two picks last week against the Cowboys. He also ran in his fourth and fifth rushing touchdowns of the season, finishing with 35 rushing yards. Darnold’s rushing touchdowns don’t seem sustainable, but they’ve helped land him at QB5 in fantasy points among quarterbacks so far this year.

This week, Darnold has a tough matchup against an Eagles defense that ranks eighth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks, but just gave up five touchdown passes to Patrick Mahomes. We have Darnold ranked as a fringe QB1 option, and if he’s still available in your league, he’s worth picking up and starting in case his rushing production continues.

CAR QB Sam Darnold - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Dallas Cowboys

Sam Darnold had a great fantasy outing against the Texans last week, throwing for 304 yards and running in two touchdowns. Darnold isn’t usually thought of for his mobility, but he’s been unafraid to use his legs in the red zone, and three rushing touchdowns through as many games. Darnold also has just one interception and is completing a career-high 68.2% of his passes.

This week, Darnold faces a Cowboys defense that ranks a surprising sixth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks this season after being a sieve a year ago. We have Darnold ranked just outside of starting material this week, making him a quality streamer or QB2 option in a game where the Panthers will probably need to throw a bit more than they have thus far this season. He’s a risky gamble, but worth considering if you have a need.

CAR QB Sam Darnold - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Houston Texans

Sam Darnold had a very solid game against the Saints last week, putting up 305 yards, two touchdowns and a pick in a 26-7 lopsided victory. The Panthers are 2-0 to start the season and looked solid all-around against the Saints, giving hope for the offensive weapons in Carolina, including Darnold.

This week, Darnold faces a Texans defense that has played better than expected through two weeks, but still seems prime for picking apart. They allowed 31 points to the Browns last week, giving Darnold some potential. We have him ranked as a solid QB2 option this week, and he has fringe QB1 upside.

CAR QB Sam Darnold - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. New Orleans Saints

Sam Darnold had a nice start to his Panthers career with 279 yards, two touchdowns – one rushing – and a victory over his former team. His fantasy numbers were modest, but that rushing touchdown is probably not something we can bank on. The Saints shut down the Packers' offense last week and ranked fifth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks last year, so fantasy managers should look elsewhere if possible in all league formats.
