Scouting report

by Scott Pagel

PHI RB Ryan Mathews - Week 15, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Arizona

Ryan Mathews carried 13 times for 38 yards in his first game back since Week 10. There were lots of rumors around the Eagles running game heading into this contest, especially about DeMarco Murray who reports had demoted to an RB4 and even inactive. But Murray and Mathews pretty much split a bulk of the work load with Darren Sproles also involved.

Mathews is still the best bet going forward to get the key carries and even in a split Mathews has been the best back in the offense in terms of production. But this is looking like a 3 or 4 headed running attack. Mathews is probably the safest bet but the workload is a big question mark. He's a low-end RB2, high-end RB3 option this week against the Cards who are 12th in allowing fantasy points to RBs.

PHI RB Ryan Mathews - Week 14, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Bills
Ryan Mathews cleared concussion protocol this week and looks primed to play against the Bills in Week 14. Mathews has a ton of upside and risk at the same time. The Birds only used DeMarco Murray on 14 snaps last week and seemed to have come to the conclusion Murray just isn't a good fit in the offense. While Mathews didn't play last week, he has proved to be the better back for the system in limited work all year. So, it's not out of the question the team turns to Mathews as the main ball carrier in what is another must-win game if the Birds want to win the division and make the playoffs. On top of all that, the Bills are actually 28th in allowing fantasy points to RBs, so this is a nice matchup on paper. Just keep in mind, the team using Mathews as the main ball carrier certainly isn't locked in stone.

PHI RB Ryan Mathews - Week 10, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs Miami

Ryan Mathews posted another very solid fantasy game last week against Dallas, running 11 times for 67 yards and a TD. It was his fourth TD of the season. Mathews continues to run behind DeMarco Murray, however, and Murray also had a big game last week.

This week, it's a great matchup against the Dolphins, who are 32nd in allowing fantasy points to RBs. Murray is averaging close to 20 carries a game over the last four, while Mathews is averaging about nine. Mathews does continue to make the most of his work with back-to-back weeks of TDs, but Mathews comes with risk due to the limited touches. Still, Mathews is a lower-end RB2 option according to our rankings.

PHI RB Ryan Mathews - Week 9, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Dallas
Ryan Mathews continues to make the most of his limited work. Back in Week 7, he carried the ball just six times, but produced 97 yards and a TD, most of that coming on a 63-yard run. Mathews is averaging about eight carries a game and a little under 50 yards a game, but does have two TDs over his last three games. He also has four TDs overall this season, one of which is a receiving TD. There's a push from fans to give him more carries, but it's hard to see that happening this week as DeMarco Murray goes against his old team.

PHI RB Ryan Mathews - Week 7, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Carolina
Ryan Mathews had nine rushes for 40 yards last week. He's averaging about eight rushes a game this season, which is about what we were figuring. He was battling an injury heading into Week 6, but still averaged 4.4 yards per carry. With DeMarco Murray having a big game and going over 100 yards, Mathews looks like he's going to continue to play the role of backup with limited touches week-to-week.

PHI RB Ryan Mathews - Week 6, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs Dallas
While DeMarco Murray had a big game in Week 5, Ryan Mathews quietly put together a nice one of his own on a lot less touches. Murray had 20 carries last week, but Mathews ran with the ball eight times for 73 yards and added a TD. He also chipped in with three catches for 23 yards. Mathews continues to look like the much better back in the Eagles offense, but Murray will likely get the bulk of the workload. Mathews has some fantasy value, but will have to continue to make the most of limited touches.

PHI RB Ryan Mathews - Week 5, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. New Orleans
Ryan Mathews ran five times for 20 yards last week. He was back to limited work as DeMarco Murray returned. It's hard not to expect much of the same this week. On top of that, it's another tough matchup as the Saints rank ninth in allowing fantasy points to running backs. As long as Murray is active, Mathews' touches should be limited.
