Scouting report

PHI RB Ryan Mathews - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Washington

With DeMarco Murray not able to play because of a hamstring injury, Ryan Mathews got the call and went for a 25-108-0 line. He added two catches for 20 yards and a TD, but did drop another potential long TD pass. He was a nice, last-minute play for those who made the switch.

With Murray still a question mark, Mathews could get the call again in Week 4 against Washington. The Skins are ranked 9th in terms of allowing fantasy points to RBs, but Mathews' good day last week came against a good defense in the Jets. The matchup doesn't always matter when the Birds running game gets going, but Mathews has high-end RB2 potential this week if he gets the work in place of Murray.

PHI RB Ryan Mathews - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Dallas
Ryan Mathews finished Week 1 with three runs for four yards, including a TD, as well as three catches for 24 yards. Mathews six touches ranked behind DeMarco Murray and Darren Sproles who both collected 12. This is to be expected much of the year, making Mathews a risky start in standard fantasy leagues.

PHI RB Ryan Mathews - Week 1, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Atlanta
Like DeMarco Murray, Ryan Mathews also makes his Eagle debut on Monday night against the Falcons. The Falcons are 31st in allowing fantasy points to RBs so this is a great matchup for the Eagles run game. We project Mathews for about 10 touches, as Darren Sproles will also be a factor -- especially in the passing game. Mathews comes in 38th on our list which is actually low-end RB3 value in 12-team leagues. He may be a risky play until we can get a better feel for how the team uses him.

PHI RB Ryan Mathews - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Ryan Mathews is capable of carrying the load and putting up borderline RB1 numbers based on his time in San Diego. The Eagles run a lot of plays and like to rush the ball under Chip Kelly, so Mathews is potentially coming into a good fit as far as system goes. With a largely unproven group of WRs, the Birds are once again expected to run the ball a lot this year.

Fantasy Downside
Despite all the positives above, there is, unfortunately, a lot of downside. Mathews has an injury history that often limits his time on the field. But more importantly, the team signed DeMarco Murray who is expected to get a bulk of the work ahead of Mathews. While the Birds run a lot of plays, there still should be chances for Mathews to get involved, but with Murray around it's going to limit his fantasy production. Don't forget about Darren Sproles in the passing game, too.

Bottom Line
Mathews ranks 40th on our list of RBs and has an ADP of the 8th round in 12 team leagues. The deeper the league, the more value Mathews has. It remains to be seen how much he's used, but we project him for between 8 and 9 carries a game. If you're a Murray owner, it may not be a bad idea to back yourself up with Mathews at some point in your draft. In typical 10-team leagues, it's hard to imagine Mathews having a ton of value. We only project him for 11 receptions so we don't see a much potential in PPR leagues either.

SD RB Ryan Mathews - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 - Mathews vs. Broncos

In Week 14, Ryan Mathews carried 11 times for 44 yards against the Patriots. The Chargers fell behind and Mathews carries were limited.

It was also reported Mathews may have a right leg injury after getting tripped up last week. There wasn't a ton of information about this, but it's something owners need to monitor leading up to the game. The Bolts will likely try to establish the run against the Broncos, but teams haven't had a lot of success doing that as Denver is second in allowing fantasy points to RBs. Mathews' carries will likely be limited again on top of already being banged up - making him a risky play, which is reflected in our rankings this week.

SD RB Ryan Mathews - Week 14, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 - Mathews vs. New England

Ryan Mathews carried 12 times for 40 yards last week but did add a TD to help salvage what otherwise would have been a poor fantasy day.

In Mathews defense, it was a pretty tough matchup as the Ravens were ranked fourth in terms of allowing fantasy points to RBs. And the Chargers played from behind a large part of the game. Things get a little easier this week as the Pats are ranked 19th in allowing points to RBs. Mathews comes in as an average RB2 play as a result.

Mathews continues to be pretty productive, getting at least 70 yards and/or a TD in four of his five games played this year. His 12 carries the past two weeks is a little cause for concern but we knew the Bolts really wanted to keep Mathews workload in check. The ground game could very well be a point of attack for SD this week.

SD RB Ryan Mathews - Week 13, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 - Mathews vs. Baltimore

In his second week back from injury, Ryan Mathews ran 12 times for 105 yards and added a TD in a tough matchup against the Rams, who were fifth in allowing fantasy points to RBs.

This week doesn't get much easier as Chargers team travels across the country to take on the Ravens, who are third in allowing points to RBs. Mathews injured his shoulder but did manage to come back, so he should be good to go for Week 13. The Chargers are making a point to limit Mathews though, with the goal to keep him fresh for a playoff run, which could potentially cap his fantasy value. We see him as an RB3 play this week.
