KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Buffalo Bills

Mecole Hardman finished 2-16 on three targets, and carried the ball twice for 25 yards last week. Some thought Hardman was set for a breakout season of sorts this year after the departure of Sammy Watkins. But he hasn't done a whole lot, averaging just 30.8 receiving yards per game. And the Chiefs activated Josh Gordon this week, which will just make things tougher. On top of that, Hardman gets a tough matchup against the Bills who have allowed the fewest fantasy points to opposing receivers. Hardman is mostly off the fantasy radar this week unless you have really deep leagues.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Philadelphia Eagles

Mecole Hardman finished 3-33-1 on four targets last week, catching his first touchdown of the season. It hasn't been a super strong season for Hardman, who has 107 receiving yards through the first three games (35.7 avg). Like in recent years, it's hard for other receivers to shine in this Kansas City offense outside of Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. Hardman will make some plays here and there, but he isn't going to be a reliable every-week player. This week he draws a tough matchup against the Eagles, who have allowed the fewest receiving yards to WRs so far this season. Hardman isn't much more than a WR4 this week.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Mecole Hardman stepped up from his Week 1 effort with a 5-55 game on eight targets in Week 2. He also played on 78% of the offensive snaps, which ties his career-high for a single game. The Chiefs finally got some other receivers involved in Week 2 as Hardman, Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle combined for 10 receptions for 164 yards and two touchdowns. This week, we expect Hardman to finish slightly below what he did in Week 2 as he gets a tough matchup against the Chargers. We like Hardman as a lower-end WR4 play in Week 3.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 @ Baltimore Ravens

Mecole Hardman had a pretty rough Week 1, finishing 3-19 on three targets. He continues to show that outside of the Big 3 in Kansas City (Mahomes/Hill/Kelce), there aren't many other reliable options in this offense. Hardman played a nice 69% of the offensive snaps in Week 1, which tied his season-high in 2020. But 19 yards just isn't going to cut it. We're expecting a better performance from Hardman in Week 2 against the Ravens, but he's only in WR4 to WR5 territory. After all, this is a receiver who has finished below 30 receiving yards in eight straight games dating back to last year.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Cleveland Browns

Mecole Hardman steps into a starting role, which is a change of pace for him. Hardman has only played more than 70% of the offensive snaps in three games in his two seasons with the Chiefs (all during his rookie season). Hardman is a speedster similar to Tyreek Hill, so big play opportunities will be there. We have a feeling Hardman could end up as a boom-or-bust play on a week-to-week basis. We like him as a WR5 heading into a favorable Week 1 matchup against the Browns.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Goodbye Sammy Watkins, hello Mecole Hardman. Even though Hardman out-targeted Watkins last season (62 to 55), he didn’t play nearly as much. Hardman didn’t top 70% of offensive snaps played in any game last year, but Watkins reached that mark in every game (aside from two when he left early due to injury). Watkins leaving frees up a big role for Hardman who should be on the field a lot more in 2021. Hardman’s speed is nearly as elite as Tyreek Hill’s, which obviously pairs nicely with Patrick Mahomes’ arm.

Fantasy Downside
While we’re expecting Hardman to step into a bigger role, there’s a chance he isn’t used as much as we think. The Chiefs may keep Hardman in a similar role as last year while utilizing Demarcus Robinson or Byron Pringle in Watkins’ old role. And even if Hardman does step up, we haven’t seen much production from players in this Chiefs offense aside from Hill and Travis Kelce.

2021 Bottom Line
Hardman is a late-round flier candidate in fantasy drafts this year. If he’s able to play more snaps, and get more targets, he could end up being a valuable asset, especially with his game-breaking speed. But he’s also someone who hasn’t reached 600 receiving yards in his two seasons, so he’s not someone you want to take too early. We have him ranked around WR50, and we’re projecting around 800 yards for him this year.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Mecole Hardman could end up being the Chiefs' No. 1 option at receiver this week. Tyreek Hill is nursing a hamstring injury, Sammy Watkins is nursing a calf injury and the Chiefs are limiting their starters, which could mean Travis Kelce sees rest as well. While Hardman could end up being the top wideout, he'd be playing with Chad Henne at QB, and on a Chiefs team that simply wants to ease into the playoffs. Hardman is interesting, but he'd be a risky play in Week 17.
