Scouting report

MIN RB Matt Asiata - Week 8, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Matt Asiata - Week 8 vs. Tampa Bay

Matt Asiata has totaled 19 rushing yards over his last two games and has just one reception in each. His value is quickly fading as rookie Jerick McKinnon is taking over the starting role. The days of him scoring three touchdowns appear to be over.

He'll get a faovrable matchup this week and should be viewed as a low RB3.

MIN RB Matt Asiata - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Matt Asiata - Week 7 vs. Buffalo

Matt Asiata's days of being the lead back in Minnesota appear to be over. He had just three total touches in Week 6 as rookie Jerick McKinnon took over starting duties. Asiata was only on the field for 24 percent of the team's offensive snaps.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said this week he wants to get Asiata more carries, but we'll see just what he means by that. Even if he does get more touches, he'll face a difficult matchup against the Bills this week.

Buffalo hasn't allowed a touchdown (rushing or receiving) to a back all season. The Bills are also holding backs to an average of 57 rushing yards per game. A reduced role in a difficult matchup makes Asiata a very low flex option this week.

MIN RB Matt Asiata - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Matt Asiata - Week 6 vs. Detroit

Matt Asiata didn't record a reception and he didn't score a touchdown in Minnesota's Week 5 game. It's the first time he's been held without a catch this season.

Asiata is not a special talent. He's averaging just 3.7 yards per carry and isn't a threat to break off a big run. He could also be losing touches to rookie Jerick McKinnon, who showed explosiveness in Week 4 when he ran for 135 yards.

He still holds value because he continues to get touches and goal line carries. But he could be moving into a bigger timeshare with McKinnon. He also gets a fairly difficult matchup this week against Detroit. He should be used as a low RB2.

MIN RB Matt Asiata - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Matt Asiata - Week 5 vs. Green Bay

There was some good news and bad news for Matt Asiata in Week 4. The good news is he finished with 100 total yards and three touchdowns. The bad news is rookie Jerick McKinnon demonstrated his potential and completely outperformed Asiata.

Asiata still had more snaps than McKinnon (44-32) and touches (23-19), so we figure he'll still get the bulk of the workload moving forward. Plus, he's always a threat to score on the goal line.

This week he has a favorable matchup against the Packers. Green Bay has allowed the fourth most fantasy points to opposing backs this season. He should be used as a borderline RB1.

MIN RB Matt Asiata - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Matt Asiata - Week 4 vs. Atlanta Falcons

Matt Asiata hasn't performed well in the absence of Adrian Peterson. He's carried the ball 25 times for 71 yards (2.8 ypc) and his longest run is a mere eight yards. He's been effective catching the football, but how long will the Vikings be willing to put up with his poor rushing production?

Rookie Jerick McKinnon is an exciting prospect who could get more touches if Asiata continues to struggle. But for now, Asiata is clearly getting the majority of the touches in Minnesota.

He'll go up against the Falcons this week. Atlanta has allowed the third most fantasy points to opposing backs this season. Before last week's massacre against the Bucs the Falcons were allowing 141 yards on the ground. The Falcons have also given the third-most receiving yards to running backs (224) this season. Asiata's ability to catch out the backfield could come in handy this week.

Asiata will get plenty of touches in a very favorable matchup. This makes him a borderline RB1 this week.

MIN RB Matt Asiata - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Matt Asiata - Week 3 vs. New Orleans

Matt Asiata finished Week 2 with 84 total yards and a touchdown. It wasn't pretty, he averaged just 2.8 yards per carry, but it turned out to be a good fantasy performance. Asiata of course takes over as the Vikings' starting running back with Adrian Peterson being shut down until his legal issues are solved. Asiata is nowhere near the talent of AP, but he appears to be a serviceable fantasy option for now.

One issue with Asiata is that he has rookie Jerick McKinnon breathing down his neck. According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Chris Tomasson, the Vikings will go with whichever back gets a "hot hand." If Asiata keeps up his 2.8 ypc, Turner may turn to McKinnon.

Asiata heads into a decent Week 3 matchup. The Saints have allowed over 120 rushing yards in each of their first two games. Really, the best Asiata owners can hope for is a repeat of Week 1. He should be viewed as a low RB2 or RB3.

MIN RB Matt Asiata - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Matt Asiata - Week 2 vs. New England

Update

Matt Asiata will be starting for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Typical starter Adrian Peterson was deactivated and won't play. Asiata filled in for AP in Week 15 when he got the start. Overall he struggled in the game rushing 30 times for just 51 yards (1.7 ypc), but he did manage to score three times. He played better in the final game of the season when he had 14 carries for 115 yards (8.2 ypc).

While he's certainly no Adrian Peterson, Asiata is a decent replacement. He's a physical runner who is good in pass protection and can catch the football. He'll be functional as a starter.

He faces a Patriots defense that allowed Knowshon Moreno to run wild for 134 yards in Week 1. In a decent matchup, Asiata should be viewed as a RB3 or flex option.

End Update

Even in a blowout Matt Asiata only carried the ball twice for 10 yards and caught one pass for five. The Vikings rely on Adrian Peterson as their running back and no one else. Okay, maybe Cordarrelle Patterson. Asiata isn't worth a look this week.
