DET RB Kerryon Johnson - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Carrying the ball 20 times last week at Philly Kerryon Johnson was held to just 36 yards but did manage a one-yard TD plunge, his first of the year. The Lions ground game hasn’t been able to get on track, as Johnson averaged just 1.8 yards per carry in the win and he’s averaging only 2.6 yards per attempt this season. Detroit could use some clock control versus the high-powered Chiefs on Sunday, so expect to see the ball in Johnson’s arms often, especially facing one of the bottom defenses at stopping the run.

DET RB Kerryon Johnson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Philadelphia Eagles
Last Sunday in the home win versus the Chargers, Kerryon Johnson led the Lions ground game with just 41 yards on 12 attempts. However, he salvaged the afternoon for fantasy owners with two grabs for 47 yards, including a 36-yard score on a screen pass. In two games Johnson has totaled only 90 yards on the ground, averaging 3.2 yards per rush. Even with the release of C.J. Anderson, Johnson will be sharing touches with rookie Ty Johnson. Philly has allowed just 85 total yards on the ground this season, so Johnson should be used as an RB3/flex option.

DET RB Kerryon Johnson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Los Angeles Chargers
In the disappointing tie to the Cardinals last week Kerryon Johnson ran for 49 yards, receiving five more carries than backfield mate C.J. Anderson. Neither RB had a good day, with both averaging just over three yards per attempt, and it’s likely they’ll be splitting carries for the foreseeable future. In Week 1 the Chargers surrendered over 200 yards on the ground to Marlon Mack and the Colts, which is a good sign for Johnson owners. However, with Anderson in the mix, he continues to be more of a RB2 option.

DET RB Kerryon Johnson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Arizona Cardinals
In the 10 contests he played in during his rookie campaign Kerryon Johnson rushed for 641 yards, including two 100-yard games. He missed the December battle with the Cardinals in Arizona. While Johnson is the No. 1 RB for the Lions, veteran C.J. Anderson will receive some touches too. Consider Johnson a RB2 play in the opener.

DET RB Kerryon Johnson - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
In his first 10 NFL games, Kerryon Johnson rushed for over 600 yards and three scores and caught 32 passes for an additional 213 yards. Fully recovered from his knee injury that kept him out of the final six contests of his rookie campaign, he will once again be Detroit’s starting RB. He averaged a healthy 5.4 yards per carry and finally broke the team’s 70-game streak of not having a 100-yard rusher by galloping for 101 yards versus the Patriots in Week 3, the first of two times he eclipsed the century mark.

Fantasy Downside
Coach Matt Patricia said he doesn’t want to overwork Johnson this year, especially coming off a knee injury. The team signed veteran C.J. Anderson, who had a nice late-season and playoff run with the Rams last year. Although Johnson should receive most of the carries, just three times last year did he have at least 15 carries and he was held to less than 50 rushing yards on four occasions.

Bottom Line
The future at RB for the Lions remains to be Johnson. During his first pro season, he displayed a combination of speed to the edge, power and decisiveness, something the team hasn’t experienced for a while. As long as he stays healthy, Johnson should receive between 15-20 touches per game and has a shot at reaching 1,000 yards.

DET RB Kerryon Johnson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Buffalo Bills

Although he’s missed the past three games, Kerryon Johnson may return Sunday at Buffalo. It’s been a RBBC for the Lions in his absence; but, even if he’s able to go this week, Johnson has a tough matchup on the road against the top defense in yards allowed.

DET RB Kerryon Johnson - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Arizona Cardinals

Kerryon Johnson has missed the past two games due to a knee injury but has a chance to return on Sunday at Arizona. LeGarrette Blount has held his own in Johnson’s absence, but the rookie is the more explosive ball carrier, something the Lions have missed recently. If he’s able to go, insert Johnson back into your starting lineup, as the Arizona defense is the fourth worst at stopping the run.
