A strained knee suffered Thursday is expected to keep Chargers WR Kelley Washington out six weeks and makes the battle for the finals wide receiver spots even more interesting.
Bryan Walters’ 103-yard kickoff return and two catches for 31 yards on Thursday put him on the radar. But veterans had already been talking about his final month on the practice squad and how he’s shown in practices.
With Seyi Ajirotutu making improvement in all facets and adding a special teams fervor, there will be an odd man out even in the likelihood the Chargers keep six receivers.
Chargers WR Malcom Floyd (hamstring doubtful) did not practice Friday and is doubtful for week 16. Patrick Crayton (wrist doubtful) missed practice Friday is also doubtful, unlikely to return to the lineup. Legedu Naanee is expected to start opposite Vincent Jackson, but is hard to trust after his zero catch performance last week. Kelley Washington (hip probable) will be the 3rd WR, but his 2-49 statline last week was rather flukey. Vincent Jackson is the only safe play here.
Tight end Antonio Gates (toe/foot) and defensive captain Stephen Cooper (knee) officially have been declared out of Sunday's game at Cincinnati. Also not participating in the final workout Friday were wide receivers Malcom Floyd (hamstring) and Patrick Crayton (wrist), each of whom has been listed as doubtful.
Questionable is the Sunday status of linebacker Larry English and offensive lineman Scott Mruczkowski. Returning from a foot injury sustained Dec. 12, English took part in practice on a limited basis.
Listed as probable are right guard Louis Vasquez, running back Ryan Mathews, fullback Jacob Hester, linebackers Antwan Applewhite and Brandon Siler and wide receiver Kelley Washington.
With Floyd and Crayton likely out, look for another big day out of Vincent Jackson with Legedu Naanee and Kelley Washington filling in.
Chargers WRs Malcom Floyd (hamstring doubtful) and Legedu Naanee (hamstring doubtful) continue to miss practice and are doubtful for this weekend. Patrick Crayton and Seyi Ajirotutu will start at wideout for the Bolts with Gary Banks coming in as a 3rd WR and newly signed Kelley Washington possibly in the mix. With Antonio Gates looking far from a sure thing this weekend, the Chargers are desperately thin of pass catchers. Expect more of Darren Sproles in a great matchup with the Texans.
