Scouting report

BAL WR Kamar Aiken - Week 6, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at San Francisco

Kamar Aiken was the top WR in Baltimore last week with Steve Smith out with an injury and wound up with a modest 78 yards on four receptions. He was targeted a team-high nine times and is an interesting option while Smith continues to mend.

This week, he’ll face a vulnerable 49ers defense that has given up the third-most passing yards this season and allowed Eli Manning to throw for 441 yards against them last week. Aiken is a risky option because he’s largely unproven, but with a nice matchup, he could be a bit of a sleeper this week. Aiekn may again reach nine targets, and if he does, he has WR2 potential in deep leagues.

BAL WR Kamar Aiken - Week 5, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Cleveland

Kamar Aiken had a nice game against the Steelers, benefiting from the additional targets he saw after Steve Smith Sr. left the game with cracked ribs. Aiken finished with five receptions, 77 yards and a touchdown and should be the Ravens primary receiving option with Smith likely sidelined in the short term.

This week, Aiken will face a Browns defense that ranks in the bottom half of the league in passing yards allowed, but has a talented secondary that could make things hard on the Ravens pass catchers. Aiken will probably get the bulk of the defensive attention, but he should also get targeted frequently in a depleted offense. He has some deep league value as a flex option or WR2, but we have him ranked just inside our top 30 receivers this week.

BAL WR Kamar Aiken - Week 3, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Cincinnati

Everyone thought Kamar Aiken might get some extra looks in Week 1, but those looks ended up coming last week against the Raiders. He had a modest outing with five catches and 89 yards on the day, but averaged nearly 18 yards per catch. Aiken may not be a top fantasy option, but he’s trying to take advantage of injuries and a lack of starter talent at the position.

This week, he’ll face a Bengals defense that has been solid against the pass, but gave up two touchdown passes to the wide receiver position last week against the Chargers. Aiken is a shaky option though, as he really only has one good week under his belt. He’s worth a roster add in large leagues, but shouldn’t be in your lineup this week.

BAL WR Kamar Aiken - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Oakland

Kamar Aiken saw added playing time last week against the Broncos with rookie Breshad Perriman still injured, but he only caught one of the three passes thrown his way and wound up with negative one yard on the day (which was not a good indicator for him as a fantasy option).

This week, he should find the going a bit easier against the Raiders, but he’s still a longshot to make a big impact. The Ravens passing game doesn’t look quite ready for the season yet, and Aiken has limited upside.

BAL WR Kamar Aiken - Week 1, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Denver

Should rookie WR Breshad Perriman not play as expected, Kamar Aiken could be the beneficiary of additional snaps in the Ravens first game against the Broncos. While Aiken should only be considered a long shot option in deep leagues, he is worth keeping an eye on as the Ravens shift to a pass-happy attack engineered by new offensive coordinator Marc Trestman. Aiken might get a brief audition while Perriman nurses his knee.

BAL WR Kamar Aiken - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

After failing to stick on the active roster his rookie season, Kamar Aiken was active for all 16 games last year for the Ravens and wound up with 24 catches for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Aiken is a 6’2 big-bodied receiver with the ability to wall off defenders and fight for jump balls. He fills a need for the Ravens and will be in the mix with rookie Breshad Perriman for a starting role opposite veteran Steve Smith.

Fantasy Upside
Aiken has had a good camp and is currently listed atop the depth chart as the outside receiver opposite Smith. He’s got enough speed to get downfield, but excels in the red zone. With Torrey Smith gone from the offense, the potential is there for Aiken to battle with Perriman and Marlon Brown for a significant increase in snaps and targets this season, making him an intriguing fantasy prospect.

Fantasy Downside
Aiken doesn’t demonstrate elite WR skills and lacks the considerable upside of Perriman. He’ll have an uphill battle to hold onto the spot atop the depth chart as the Ravens will be hoping Perriman will emerge sooner rather than later. Even if Aiken starts, he will have limited fantasy value as he will be competing for targets with two tight ends, a solid group of running backs and Smith.

Bottom Line
Expect Aiken to start in the preseason and then move back to a reserve role as the season gets going. He is not as much of a playmaker as Perriman projects to be and he isn’t the red zone threat that Marlon Brown is. While he will likely make the roster and continue to get some occasional looks in the passing game, his limited role will probably put him back in the 20-30 catch range this season. He shouldn’t be drafted in most leagues, barring any injuries during the preseason to the other Ravens receivers.

BAL WR Kamar Aiken - Week 19, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Divisional Round – Kamar Aiken vs. New England
Kamar Aiken had one catch and four yards last week against the Steelers and his targets continue to be inconsistent week-to-week. Regardless, he remains at least the third receiver on a team that targets the tight end consistently, making him at best, the fourth option in the passing game when he’s even on the field. That’s too risky to count on and hopefully you’re not looking to Aiken to make a difference on your fantasy roster.
