LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Kansas City Chiefs

Justin Herbert's 227 yards and two touchdowns masked what was a pretty ordinary performance from the Chargers QB. But they helped propel his fantasy output, with Herbert scoring 18.6 fantasy points and finishing as the QB5 in Week 6. Herbert is the QB1 in fantasy points per game at the QB position.

Herbert has one of the toughest matchups across the league in Week 7 with the Chargers taking on the Chiefs. The Chiefs are ranked third in aFPA to quarterbacks this season. Herbert will have his work cut out for him if he wants to extend his run of tossing at least three touchdowns in every game he has played at Arrowhead, but he can still be viewed as a top-six option at the quarterback spot this week.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Dallas Cowboys

Through four games of the 2023 season, no quarterback has more fantasy points per game than Justin Herbert. Herbert is averaging 276.5 passing yards and 23.9 fantasy points per game, with seven passing touchdowns and a solitary interception.

It won't be easy for Herbert to carry on his torrid start to the season in Week 6 with a clash against the Cowboys on the slate. The Cowboys rank 10th in aFPA to quarterbacks this season. Still, Herbert should be able to produce some decent numbers, and it would be foolish to expect less than a mid-tier QB1 outing this week.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

What a week for Justin Herbert against the Vikings in Week 3. Herbert completed a staggering 40 of his 47 attempts on his way to a career-high 405 passing yards with three touchdowns to boot. He also carried the ball twice, but only for 11 yards. Herbert finished top of the QB tree in terms of fantasy points and is the overall QB1 in fantasy points per game after three weeks of the season.

There is a good chance of the good times continuing in Week 4 as Herbert takes on the Raiders. The Raiders have positively welcomed fantasy points against them through the air this season, and rank 25th in aFPA to quarterbacks. If you have Herbert on any fantasy roster, set and forget.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Minnesota Vikings

Justin Herbert had a decent fantasy outing in Week 2, despite being unable to prevent the Chargers from falling to 0-2 on the young season. Herbert completed 27 of his 41 pass attempts for 305 yards and two touchdowns, posting 22.2 Half PPR points. Only nine quarterbacks scored more a week ago, and after two weeks Herbert sits at QB3.

Herbert has a matchup to die for in Week 3 as the Chargers take on the leaky Vikings defense. We should expect a solid QB1 outing from the Chargers quarterback in what could be one of the best shootouts on the slate.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Tennessee Titans

Justin Herbert was one of the best fantasy quarterbacks on the entire Week 1 slate despite numbers that are, at best fairly pedestrian, and not all that dissimilar to his efforts from a year ago. He completed 70% of his passes, finding his men on 23 of 33 attempts, but he could only muster 228 yards and a single touchdown. Herbert did salvage his day with a rushing touchdown, and he earned 20.7 Half PPR points, finishing as the QB4.

Herbert has an enticing matchup against the Tennessee Titans in Week 2, and should once again be able to produce solid fantasy numbers. He's a mid-range QB1 according to our projections.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Miami Dolphins

2022 was a frustrating, and weird, season for Justin Herbert. He set career highs with 477 completions at a 68% rate. But his yards per attempt was down from 7.5 to 6.8. Also, while he racked up 4,739 passing yards, he could only toss 25 touchdowns after 69 combined scores in the previous two seasons. Herbert contributed virtually nothing as a rusher, with 147 scoreless yards on the ground. Herbert averaged 16.3 Half-PPR points per game and finished as the QB12 overall.

But things should be different this season. With Kellen Moore installed as the offensive coordinator, the team is set to ramp up the passing volume and aggressiveness. The road to fantasy redemption starts against a Miami Dolphins defense that bled fantasy points to quarterbacks last season, with the Dolphins ranking 30th in aFPA to the position. Vic Fangio should tighten the unit up considerably, but you can still look at Herbert as a strong QB1 option in Week 1.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The schedule makers were kind to Justin Herbert, who faces a slate that DraftKings ranked as the most fantasy-friendly for QBs in 2023. That being the case, it's fair to expect big things. Remember, Herbert passed for the most yards in NFL history in a player's first three seasons and the second-most TDs behind only Dan Marino. Since he entered the league in 2020, only Patrick Mahomes (24) has rung the 300-yard bell more times than Herbert (22) and only four QBs had more than his 16 contests with three-plus TDs. RB Austin Ekeler (team-high 107 grabs in 2022), Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, and Gerald Everett all return and the Chargers drafted TCU WR Quentin Johnston in the first round. New offensive coordinator Kellen Moore had the NFL's No. 1 offense in total yards in Dallas in two of the past four years. "Really excited to get to work with him," said Herbert, who had shoulder surgery in January but was on track for training camp.

Fantasy Downside
Last season's QB12 finish was obviously disappointing, but as noted above, a rebound seems likely -- assuming Herbert gets in all the work he needs next month. The Chargers continue to express optimism in finalizing a long-term contract for Herbert during the upcoming window before training camp kicks off. Herbert was recently asked whether he could stage a hold-in during camp if the sides can't hammer out an extension. "When it comes time for camp, the role of the quarterback is to be out there for his team and do everything that he can to put that team in a position to win," he said, via the team's official transcript. "I understand that responsibility. It's something that you'll address when the time comes, but I guess we'll see."

2023 Bottom Line
In an ideal world, one in which he's happy, practicing as usual throughout August and throwing to his impressive array of weapons, Herbert -- with a QB7 ADP -- could actually provide value. As 4for4's John Paulsen suggests, Herbert is "one of a handful of quarterbacks with overall QB1 upside."
